ESO Best Classes Tier List 2026

ESO has just seven classes; the recent changes to the Class Mastery and subclasses have made it pretty difficult to choose which ones are better right now. In this tier list, I rank every ESO class by their solo strength, PvE and PvP performance, mechanical difficulty, and how good their build variety is.

ESO Classes Tier List TL;DR

  • Dragonknight is my best overall ESO class after its recent refresh, with excellent solo survival, melee pressure, tanking, and PvP performance.

  • Sorcerer is the best class for beginners who want strong damage, pets, shields, mobility, and easy one-bar builds.

  • Warden is my most versatile group class and the strongest choice for players interested in tanking or healing.

  • Arcanist remains one of the easiest damage dealers to perform well with, especially in dungeons and other cleave-heavy content.

  • Nightblade has fantastic damage and sustain, but getting everything out of it takes more work than playing Arcanist or Sorcerer.

  • Necromancer is much stronger in organized PvE than its reputation suggests, although its clunky rotation and weak PvP toolkit hold it back.

  • Templar is a new player-friendly class with great healing, but it lacks the standout strengths of the S-tier picks.’

ESO Best Classes Tier List 2026

ESO Best Classes Tier List

I am not ranking Werewolf as a separate class, and I am not making one particularly broken subclass combination to get its base class several tiers upward. A class earns a higher placement when I can comfortably use it for several types of content without feeling forced into one build. Every ESO class can complete normal content and perform every role, so the lower tiers represent narrower or harder options rather than classes you should avoid entirely.

Tier

Classes

S-Tier

Dragonknight, Sorcerer, Warden

A-Tier

Arcanist, Nightblade

B-Tier

Necromancer, Templar

There are no C- or D-Tier classes because ESO is genuinely not balanced like a game where picking the wrong character can lock you out of content. Stuff like efficiently picked gear and player execution is the only thing that actually matters. Subclassing has narrowed the gap even further by letting characters borrow tools they previously lacked. The only difference is how hard each class has to actually get their content goals done.

Best ESO Classes Explained

The S-Tier classes have the broadest collection of strong builds at their disposal, and A-Tier classes are fantastic picks with a few limitations. B-Tier classes can still get their preferred content done, but their weaker tuning or higher execution requirements are making things a bit harder.

1. Dragonknight - Best ESO Class Overall

Dragonknight ESO

Dragonknight is the number-one class in 2026. The recent class refresh gave it a stronger identity, and the result is a class that feels useful without borrowing half its bar from someone else. It is an aggressive melee fighter, but it can also become one of the safest solo characters or a highly desirable trial tank if you choose to go for that.

For solo play, Dragonknight has the best combination of pressure and survival you can pick in Update 50. Current veteran hard-mode solo testing places both Magicka and Stamina Dragonknight in S-Tier, ahead of the other standard classes. It can heal through combat, regain resources through ultimates and class mechanics, and stay in melee range without folding for a moment.

Dragonknight is also back near the top of PvP. It wears opponents down with constant damage, then finishes them with Leap, Shattering Rocks, and Whip. The trade-off is that most good Dragonknight builds are melee brawlers. Players who want to attack from a distance will probably enjoy Sorcerer more.

2. Sorcerer - Best ESO Class for Beginners

Sorcerer ESO

Sorcerer is the class I would recommend to most new players who have no idea what role they will eventually prefer. Pets can deal damage and provide healing, Hardened Ward gives an enormous defensive buffer, and Streak offers mobility that other classes have to work much harder to even get close to.

The biggest advantage is that Sorcerer supports several difficulty levels. A new player can begin with pets and a one-bar Heavy Attack setup, while an experienced player can move into faster two-bar rotations, weaving in PvP kiting, Werewolf builds, or trial support.

Sorcerer is also one of the best PvP classes in Update 50. It has a ranged damage kit, high mobility, powerful shields, and good sustain, which is a great PvP combination. Dragonknight may be the stronger stand-and-fight brawler, but Sorcerer gets to decide where the fight happens in the first place.

The class is much more capable as a tank than its appearance suggests. Sorcerer currently ranks in S-Tier for trial tanking and among the strongest beginner tank options, thanks to Hardened Ward, Bound Aegis, cost reduction, passive healing, and resource restoration from its Class Mastery toolkit.

3. Warden - Best ESO Support Class

Warden ESO

Warden is the class I would choose if I wanted one character that could take any role. Warden is the best dungeon tank and one of the strongest trial tanks. It has so much group support in its kit; it’s ridiculous, and buffs are extremely important in PvE group content. Healing abilities are great, with Green Balance serving as a healing foundation and Winter’s Embrace and Class Mastery bringing defensive buffs and offensive support. In a four-player group, a Warden support can cover several effects that would otherwise need to come from different players.

Damage is no longer the part you have to apologize for, either. A current pure-class Magicka Warden setup has demonstrated roughly 186,900 DPS on the trial dummy while retaining access to Major or Minor Brittle through small build changes. Dummy numbers never tell the entire story, but this one proves Warden is not just a healer wearing damage gear. PvP Warden is a durable and beginner-friendly option you could use to learn the game while surviving stuff easier.

4. Arcanist - Best Easy PvE DPS Class

Arcanist ESO

Arcanist is the class I recommend when somebody wants high dungeon damage without learning one of ESO’s more frantic rotations. Build Crux, spend it on Fatecarver, keep your supporting effects active, and point the big green beam through as many enemies as possible to get huge damage numbers.

That beam-based rotation works especially well in dungeons and arenas where enemies stack together. Outside of cleave, the class also brings shields and respectable support through its native kit.

Arcanist is only good rather than OP in PvP. The class performs better when it relies more on its defensive tools and burst combinations instead of trying to play PvP like a stationary trial dummy parse beaming people down.

5. Nightblade - Best High-Skill ESO Class

Nighblade ESO

Nightblade is the mobility class with great sustain and single-target damage. It can look fantastic in capable hands, but I would not recommend it over Arcanist or Sorcerer to somebody learning ESO’s combat system for the first time.

Its biggest strength is the number of jobs it can perform. Nightblade can play ranged or melee DPS, become a PvP ganker, heal with Siphoning, or tank with excellent self-sustain.

PvP is where the class has lost some of its aura. Sudden burst still works, but experienced opponents have far more healing and defensive options than they did years ago. Nightblade can still delete an unprepared player, yet it has a harder time forcing kills against somebody who knows when to block and heal.

6. Necromancer - Best AoE PvE Class

Necromancer ESO

Necromancer is the hardest class on this list to rank because its reputation and actual organized PvE performance tell two completely different stories. Ask a PvP player and you may hear that Necromancer is clunky, slow, and missing basic offensive tools. Put a good Corpseburster setup into a trial or trash-heavy dungeon and the class can showcase some of the strongest AoE damage in the game.

Necromancer is also an excellent trial tank with its Spirit Guardian and DoT reduction. PvP remains the painful part. Necromancer has survivability and sustain, but its offensive skills are telegraphed, and it lacks the dependable crowd control and finishing damage you can get on Dragonknight or Sorcerer.

If you enjoy AoE detonation playstyle, Necromancer is your guy. But I would definitely not choose him as my first character merely because the niche is too narrow.

7. Templar - Best Beginner Healer

Templar ESO

Throughout the years, Templar remains one of ESO’s most approachable classes. Puncturing Sweeps combines damage and self-healing, Restoring Light gives it a natural healer identity, and the class does not need an extensively thought-out setup before it starts feeling useful.

The problem is that Templar rarely owns the top spot anymore. Warden brings more group healing and can tank for the group. Dragonknight is the stronger solo brawler. Sorcerer has better mobility and ranged DPS. Arcanist dishes out cleave damage with fewer moving parts involved.

Templar is a good PvP class, especially when it can defend a position and fight inside its own healing area. What holds it back is a lack of burst. Jabs damage can be reduced heavily by Major Evasion, and Power of the Light or Purifying Light does not pressure experienced opponents as reliably as the burst combinations available to stronger PvP classes. Current trial tank rankings place it in A-Tier, so this is not a weak class. It is simply overshadowed by classes with more obvious specialties.

Best ESO Classes for Beginners

Best ESO Classes For Beginners

Sorcerer is the best class for beginners in 2026. As I’ve mentioned already, pets reduce how much of the damage rotation you have to manage, Hardened Ward gives you room to outlive mistakes, and Critical Surge can keep your Health moving in the positive direction. The class also has somewhere to go build-wise after the beginner phase. Sorcerer can progress into high-end DPS builds, PvP, trial tanking, dip into the Werewolf path, heavy-attack builds, or more mechanically demanding two-bar setups.

And Templar is the second choice. Sweeps, strong healing, and an obvious holy-warrior identity make it easy to understand. Arcanist is another good option once the player is comfortable with channeling Fatecarver while not getting hit by puddle attacks
