How We Pick the Best Consumables to Carry in Fortnite

This list weighs more than raw healing numbers. A utility item earns its tier based on how strongly it impacts the outcome of your games, especially against players who can aim and punish bad decisions. Here are the main factors we’ve taken into consideration while picking the best consumables to carry in Fortnite:

  • Speed and flexibility of use (how easy the item is to use from any position and in any situation)

  • Slot value (how much impact you get from one inventory slot)

  • Fight impact (forcing rotations, creating cover, denying angles, disengaging)

  • Consistency of use

  • Team value (how much it helps duos and squads, not just solos)

An item doesn’t have to check every box; if it does one job exceptionally well, it's worth using to cover that specific need.

After the list, you’ll find quick explanations for why each item lands where it does and how to actually use it in fights. Here’s a table format of our Fortnite utilities tier list:

Tier

Utility Items

S-Tier

Chug Jug, Shield Potion, Shockwave Grenade, Forsaken Vow Blade

A-Tier

Shield Keg, Shield Fish, Shield Bubble, Wingsuit

B-Tier

Mini Shield Potion, Grenade, Clinger, Dynamite, Self-Revive Device

C-Tier

Port-a-Bunker, Med Kit

D-Tier

Food items

Every item could have its niche situational use case where it could be good, but this is how things generally are - S-tier options are simply superior and always worth carrying, and lower-tierers are way more undesirable. With that being said, let’s cover every tier and the items in it in more detail.

S-Tier

S-Tier items are the most flexible and usable; you always need to pick them up. These items either swing an engagement in your favor instantly or let you reset when you should be dead.

Chug Jug

The Chug Jug tops off our list of Fortnite best heals ranked. When you can safely chug it up, it provides the amounts of healing that no other item can rival. Its biggest strength is that it heals 200 shield and health points per slot, making it the best healing choice, backpack space-wise. How to get the most from it:

Shield Potion

Fortnite Shield Potion

A big Shield Potion is iconic at this point - it’s a simple item, yet capable of providing consistent value. It stacks up to 3, allowing you to heal up to 150 shield per slot and do so quite quickly. Here's why it stays a top-tier choice throughout the years:

  • It’s universally useful and has great healing value per slot.

  • It stabilizes your midgame and lets you rotate confidently.

  • It’s still relevant late, because having more heals than your opp is as important as having a comparable weapon arsenal.

Shockwave Grenade

Shockwave Grenade Fortnite

Shockwaves are the best mobility item in Fortnite and are valued by good players throughout many chapters and seasons. They let you disengage from a losing angle, take height, break someone’s line of sight, or launch an aggressive push that would normally be impossible. You can even use it inside the buildings and player builds, allowing you to just break out through the wall or ceiling and take the fight from a better position. Strong shockwave habits are:

  • Save at least one grenade for escape. Don’t spend all your mobility on a highlight push.

  • Use them to split teams. Launch onto one player while their teammate loses the angle.

  • In final circles, shockwaves can force someone out of cover or off height without needing perfect aim.

Forsaken Vow Blade

Forsaken Vow Blade Fortnite

This blade is S-Tier -  it combines mobility, pressure, and the possibility of instant gap closing. You shouldn’t try to go for elims with it, the movement alone can win rotations and create chaos in tight zones.

A-Tier

A-tier items are strong and often game-winning, but they tend to be a little more situational and not as universal as their S-Tier alternatives.

Shield Keg

Keg is a team value in a bottle. In duos and squads, it’s one of the fastest ways to get everyone back into fighting shape without burning through heals. The downside is that it can reveal your location you are forced to stay immobile for the duration of its effect.

Shield Fish

Shield Fish Fortnite

Shield Fish sits in a nice spot compared to other food items because they are quick to use, flexible, especially when you have several of them stacked. They’re especially good when you want a faster top-off than a big Shield Potion, or you’re playing a more mobile style and don’t want to stop for long. What keeps them out of the S-Tier is their lack of consistency. It’s hard to find them, and their value can swing based on your route and how much time you spend near fishing spots or loot paths that include them.

Shield Bubble

A Shield Bubble should be at the top of the list of best Fortnite consumables when it comes to cover creation. It can cancel out an opponent’s perfect angle, protect a revive, or give you a clean moment to heal - all while not obscuring the view. It’s also a strong anti-third-party tool, allowing you to take your time healing up and reloading while other teams are approaching. It’s still not an S-Tier item, though, since you generally choose to take mobility and healing items first.

Wingsuit

Wingsuit long-distance rotation potential is great. It can turn a risky on-foot rotation into a safe glide, and it can help you recover from bad circles and unfavorable fights. The trade-off is that it’s noisy, slow to start, and easy to hit while both starting the flight and during it.

B-Tier

B-Tier is where items become more “good if you know why you’re holding it.” These can still help you win fights, especially early, but they’re not the best default choice going into the mid and late game.

Mini Shield Potion

Fortnite Mini Shields

Minis are reliable, quick, and always welcome in the early game. They are great when you need fast shields to win your first fights and for quick, small health when you have not found anything. Minis drop into B tier here mainly because they’re limited in how far they can take you, and because other shield options can cover more value per slot in certain lobbies.

Clinger

These are the best throwables in Fortnite. Clingers are better than standard grenades when you land them directly on the player - they stick to them, dealing unavoidable damage. They can punish predictable turtling, and they can force panic edits, which is valuable. Still, its use case is situationall and it’s hard to imagine someone trying to stick a grenade at you other than in the very early game.

Grenade

Standard grenades can be strong, but their fuse time is way too long. Against good players, grenades could force a short rotation; dealing damage with them is almost impossible. They still have value for flushing someone out of a box or destroying builds, but that remains very situational.

Dynamite

Dynamite is an area denial and a demolition tool with the slowest fuse time of the bunch. It can break structures and force repositioning, but it usually doesn’t happen fast enough to guarantee results against disciplined opponents. It’s still useful when you want to clear space without wasting ammo or when you’re fighting around buildings and tight angles.

Self-Revive Device

A self-revive tool sounds like a huge deal, but it’s way too slow to activate and very conditional. If you have teammates who can protect you during the revive time, it’s good. Otherwise, it is completely unusable and not worth the slot.

C-Tier

C-Tier isn’t “trash,” but these are outclassed by the items with the same functions. These items are fine when you need them, but you’d usually rather upgrade to a higher-tier alternative.

Port-a-Bunker

Port-a-Bunker is exactly what the name implies - quick cover. Usually not worth the slot, the shield bubble is way superior - it does not obstruct your vision, it has duel outplay potential with quick peeks.

Med Kit

Med Kits Fortnite

Med Kits are classic, but they’re slow and often awkward in real fights. If you can safely use a Med Kit, you were probably safe enough to use something else. They become more valuable when you’re low on other healing options, or you’re planning storm plays, but as a default healing pick, they’re hard to justify carrying.

D-Tier

D-Tier items are almost completely irrelevant compared to the high-tier alternatives.

Food items

Fortnite Food Items

Food items can save you in a pinch, but they usually offer low impact per slot compared to Fortnite's best heals ranked higher in our list. They’re fine early when you’re scraping together resources, but once you have real heals, food becomes the first thing you drop for mobility, shields, or fight control.

Conclusion

The best utility items in Fortnite do one of three things: they reset you fast, they control the fight, or they solve rotations you’d otherwise lose. That’s why Shockwave Grenades, big shields, and top-tier mobility sit at the top, while slower, lower-impact options fall down the list.

Some of these items get switched up depending on the season or mode, but the logic stays the same. If the item consistently provides good heals, enables you to push, or reset a fight, it’s worth using. Good utility buys time, fixes your mistakes, forces enemy movement, and lets you take fights on your terms and with the upper hand. Carrying bad utility eats up your scarce backpack space, reducing your chances to win.
