PoE 2 Runes of Aldur Guide

Runes of Aldur is a part of a huge 0.5 patch for PoE2. It’s also the first full challenge league in Path of Exile 2, with improved gear crafting possibilities, new skill gems, and a reworked Expedition endgame. In this PoE 2 Runes of Aldur guide, I’ll explain how the league works from Act 1 to Atlas.

Runes of Aldur Guide TL;DR

  • Runes of Aldur revolves around Ezomyte Remnants, which let you choose rune recipes, fight empowered enemies, and claim crafted rewards.

  • Verisium is the main league material, used for Runeforging armor, adding Runic Ward, and upgrading some Unique items.

  • Runic Ward is a new defensive layer and a resource that protects you after reaching 1 Life, and allows you to spend it on Kalguuran Skill gems

  • Runic Alloys work like a risky crafting currency

  • The endgame version of the league expands Expedition into Ocean Exploring, Grand Expeditions, faction leaders' boss fights, and a Pinnacle Boss to encounter.

Runes of Aldur League Overview

Runes of Aldur is the new Path of Exile 2 league mechanic introduced with Return of the Ancients. The update itself adds a lot of other content, but Runes of Aldur is the league-specific system tied to Remnants, Verisium, Runic Ward, new runes, Kalguuran skills, and Expedition endgame.

To sum it all up quickly, running acts and waystones, you’ll find an Ezomyte Remnant in an area, choose a Runic Recipe which turns certain runes into other league-related items, fight the enemies that spawn, and then claim your reward. Some of the league consumables you get are super powerful and are definitely worth the fight.

How Ezomyte Remnants Work

Ezomyte Remnants PoE 2

Ezomyte Remnants are the main objects you interact with during the league - they look like huge runestones with sockets in them. They appear in campaign and endgame areas, giving you a set of rune slots that can be used to form Runic Recipes. Each Remnant can have between 2 and 10 slots, and the higher-slot Remnants are much rarer; the number of slots equals the number of enemy waves you’ll have to fight. Speaking of endgame, here's the complete Atlas progression guide.

Farrow and League Progression

Farrow is the main NPC for Runes of Aldur. He introduces the league’s lore to you and unlocks several key systems as you move through the campaign:

  1. Verisium Runeforging becomes available in Act 1

  2. Runic Alloys unlock in Act 2

  3. Unique Verisium Runeforging unlocks in Act 3

  4. Ancient Runes become available after his Act 4 quest.

Do not ignore Farrow’s quests while leveling. Skipping them can delay unlocking some of the league’s most powerful crafting options.

Verisium and Runeforging

Runeforging PoE2

Verisium is the new material dropped by enemies raised from Remnants. I don’t think it would be an overstatement to say that it’s one of the most important league resources in the game because it powers Runeforging. Regular Verisium Runeforging unlocks in Act 1. It lets you add Runic Ward to armor, more on Ward later.

Unique Verisium Runeforging unlocks later in the campaign, in Act 3. This system upgrades low-level Unique Weapons and Armors, making some leveling Uniques stay relevant longer. Weapons gain better base damage, while armor gains improved defenses and Runic Ward.

This is especially useful for Uniques with effects that remain good, even if their base stats fall behind.

Runic Ward and Kalguuran Skills Explained

Runic Ward is the new stat added in Runes of Aldur. It could work in two ways - either as a last defensive layer of sorts, being depleted after your health reaches 1, or be used as a resource for Kalguuran skills. Of course, it also regenerates separately from Life and ES.

Kalguuran Skills and Supports are colorless league gems crafted from Remnants. These I’m actually stoked about and want to give them a try - gems like Triskelion Cascade and Frostflame Nova visually look great and provide more build variety, which is always welcome. Some of them work in full dependence on Runic Ward, so there’s definitely a whole new dimension of theory crafting and build scaling potential.

New Runes and Alloys in Runes of Aldur

Runes of Aldur adds several new reward types, and most of them come from Remnant progression. Some are simple socket bonuses, while others completely change how you craft gear and build your character:

  1. Runic Alloys are one of the most important crafting rewards in the entire game. They remove a random modifier from a Rare item and add a new guaranteed modifier. That makes them powerful, but risky. They are best used on items that already have one or two replaceable mods, not on gear that is nearly perfect. There’s a huge 0.5 crafting overview, you can check it out.

  2. The Unique-based rune system is also worth watching. Some runes can be made by destroying Unique items, carrying part of that Unique’s effect into rune form. This is an insane build-enabling effect, and it certainly will be well-utilized in some of the best builds in the game.

In the endgame, the Runes of Aldur system expands through Expedition. Expedition Remnants have been changed into Runes of Aldur Remnants, and Logbooks have been reworked into Ocean Exploring. According to the wiki, instead of only opening a Logbook area, you reveal parts of the ocean and travel to islands, which is TBH wild to me as a POE1 player, I’ll definitely miss the old system.

This endgame system leads you into Grand Expeditions, defeating faction leaders' bosses, and the league’s Pinnacle Boss path. Medved, Vorana, Uhtred, and Olroth appear as major Expedition faction leaders. Defeating Olroth gives access to the key needed for the Runes of Aldur Pinnacle Boss. For players who enjoy boss hunting, this gives Runes of Aldur more depth and reasons to play.

Runes of Aldur Challenge Rewards

Runes of Aldur Challenge Rewards

Hope you’ve missed the freebies just like I did - Runes of Aldur adds the first full set of Path of Exile 2 league challenges. The main reward set is the cosmetic Knight of Aldur armor. You also earn pieces of the Runes of Aldur Challenger Trophy and hideout Totem decoration as you complete challenges.
