What is FiveM Explained

You probably heard of GTA RP and FiveM at least once. Maybe you even have a favourite streamer or character in one of the servers. But for those who don’t know and who’s eager to try to roleplay, FiveM is a framework that allows players to browse and join custom-dedicated servers with unique game modes, vehicles, clothes, etc. FiveM is only available for PC. It is widely used for roleplaying communities, but FiveM is not exclusive for RP. There are also racing, tycoon, deathmatch, and zombie survival servers available as well. But RP servers are the most popular and probably the most complex ones in terms of rules and mechanics. For this FiveM beginner’s guide, I’m gonna be focusing on one of the most popular RP servers as an example.

Important Note: FiveM currently doesn’t support GTA 5 Enhanced, so you need to have GTA 5 Legacy installed on your PC in order to play.

How To Install FiveM Tutorial

Even though FiveM is a huge part of GTA community, installing and getting in is not as easy as it may seem. You can’t just launch GTA 5 and start playing by just clicking 1 button, like you do with GTA Online. But installing FiveM is not too complicated. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Go to the official FiveM website (https://fivem.net/)

2. Click “Download Client”

3. Follow easy step-by-step instructions

4. Install FiveM on your PC

5. Wait for the installation to complete and launch FiveM

As I mentioned before, you need a copy of GTA 5 installed on your PC. It doesn’t matter if it’s on Steam, Epic Games Store, or Rockstar Games Launcher. All of them will do. FiveM normally will locate GTA 5 itself, but if there are any issues, you can also copy the path to the game files yourself. If there are any update messages, click yes and update FiveM. As for system requirements, you don’t need to have an over-the-top PC, but some servers are very heavy. Here are officiall system requirements for FiveM:

Probably the most important thing you’ll need to have is a microphone. Without micro, you’ll have a very difficult time playing RP. Also, I recommend keeping your GTA 5 game up to date in order to play any server you want. There can be issues sometimes if your main game hasn’t been updated. Upon launching FiveM, you’ll need to log in or sign up to the Rockstar Games. You can also log in with your Steam or Epic Games account as well. After that, you’ll see the main FiveM screen. Here you can browse servers, link your other accounts, and also go to settings, forums, and more.

Choosing a FiveM Server to Play

Currently, there are more than 17K servers on FiveM, which is insane. It can be overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. You're probably wondering now, “What’s the difference between whitelisted and public FiveM servers?” Public servers allow instant access to anyone, while whitelisted servers require an application or interview process to ensure higher-quality, serious RP. But that’s just the basics. Let’s take a closer look at the differences:

For new players, I would recommend checking out public servers without strict RP rules, so that you can learn, meet new people, and dip a toe in the water, so to speak. Public servers like CityLife Roleplay and Highlife are the first that come to mind as the best ones for beginners. Biggest and most popular servers like NoPixel and Prodigy RP also have a public version, and they’re great. But the rules are more strict though, and roleplay is serious there.

Starting Out GTA 5 Roleplay as a New Player

Now that we figured it all out, let’s dive into roleplay. I’ll be taking Prodigy RP as an example here. Most server fundamentals are the same. It’s when you become more deeply invested in mechanics the differences start to show up. But Prodigy RP is a good example. It’s a very well-optimised server with a lot of content. When you first load in to any server, you’ll have to download all custom content. It will take some time, depending on the server and your internet speed.

Important Note: You can connect to most servers directly from FiveM’s server browser. But some bigger and more advanced servers like NoPixel require you to connect from their website. This method usually redirects you to another FiveM build.

Character Creation

Just like in GTA Online, it all starts with a character creation. But unlike GTAO, there are usually more options for customization and character creation is more deep overall. Keep in mind that you’ll still have to mix faces (parents) and drag sliders left and right to make a good-looking (or not) character. But it’s still more advanced than you can see in regular GTA Online.

Learning Basics & RP Rules

When you’re done creating your character, you’ll either be respawned somewhere on the map, or you’ll have to choose it yourself. More often the airport (because you’re new to the city and just landed in) or apartments will be your first respawn point. I personally prefer when servers do an apartment as a starting point, so you can take some time learning controls, going into settings to change your graphics, look into controls, etc. I also recommend thinking about your character’s lore and backstory in advance. It’s very important for RP and storytelling, especially if you’re in a serious roleplay server. Also at some point you’ll have to choose if you’re going for criminal or civilian RP, but more about that later. You may notice that the UI is similar to regular GTA 5 and GTA Online, but with some differences. In case of Prodigy RP, we have a health bar and needs at the bottom left of the screen. Yes, you heard that right, there are needs in most of GTA 5 RP servers. You’ll have to eat and drink in time, otherwise, your character will pass out. In case of Prodigy RP, you don’t have mini map all the time. It only appears when you’re in a vehicle. Also take a look at the bottom right of the screen. In most servers there’s an indication of how far people can hear you. There are usually 3 distances of how far you can talk:

• Very Close (Whispering)

• Normal Talk

• Far (Shouting)

When you enter a car, you’ll see a speedometer as a UI element. This is a case for most servers, and another big difference with GTA Online. I think the phone is also worth mentioning. Phones are a huge part of RP, and they’re way more advanced than the regular ones in GTA Online. You can add contacts of other players by asking for their number, and you can later call them. There are also some kinds of social apps installed on the phone, like Twatter on NoPixel, L on Prodigy RP, or Birdy on other servers. Take your time and make sure to explore your phone!

When you’re done with learning basics and setting everything up, go outside and meet new people. When you see someone, greet them, introduce yourself, ask their name, and say you’re new to the city. It will keep the conversation going, and meeting new friends is an important part of the RP experience. Also, keep in mind that a big part of roleplay is to avoid ruining the immersion. This means you can’t use words like server (instead, you need to say city), lag (instead, it’s headache), and so on. Criminal vs Civilian RP - Main Differences and What to Choose

As I mentioned before, at some point, you’ll have to choose between criminal and civilian RP. Criminal RP is focused on illegal activities like robberies and gangs to build power, often leading to intense police chases. Civilian RP focuses on legal jobs like police, EMS, mechanics, or business owners to build social connections and make money. It can be hard to choose, but in most servers, you can switch up later or even combine both criminal and civilian RP. The only important thing is that it’s all need to be natural and make sense story-wise. Here are some highlights and differences between criminal and civilian RP in GTA 5:

At the end of the day, it’s up to you and your preferences to choose criminal or civilian RP. You can also try both by making a new character if you want to!

How to Make Money in FiveM Server

As a new GTA 5 RP player, you can’t just easily get a gun and start robbing stores, doing heists, and making big money right away. No, in roleplay, you’ll have to start slow and build up your inventory as well as reputation. In most servers, you can’t even steal a car that easily, like you can in GTA 5 Online. You’ll have to start with easy jobs to make some starter money. In Prodigy RP, for example, you can do powerwashing, postal delivery, mining, towing, and more. All these jobs are solo-friendly and don’t take too much time and effort. I personally prefer powerwashing. You also have daily activities with small rewards. Like i said, you’ll have to start slow and build connections. Meeting new people is a big part of RP, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or ask someone to show you around the city.

Big money will come later when you join a gang, do heists and missions if you decide to stick with criminal RP (beach mission, anyone?). If you prefer civilian RP, it’s more about grinding and working towards making a business. If you manage to make a successful business, this is where the good money starts to show up in your bank account. It’s all about dedication and good RP!

Common FiveM Issues & Troubleshooting

FiveM servers are very customizable. Some servers are overflown with custom content to the point of including a whole new map on top of regular Los Santos! It looks cool on paper, but in terms of performance even most optimized servers can experience issues. Here are the most common problems and what you can do to fix them:

Errors that prevent connecting to the server

When trying to the server, the error may appear preventing you from doing so. Here’s what you can do:

• Flush DNS (Open CMD/PowerShell and run ipconfig /flushdns command in it)

• Clear your FiveM cache (Close FiveM, go to file location, and delete cache, server-cache, and server-cache-priv folders, but keep game and ipfs_data)

• Use software that allow you to change your virtual location

Textures not loading correctly

Sometimes game has issues loading in regular textures and instead everything looks weird, low rez, and mushy. It happens a lot, especially in heavily customized servers with too much custom content. Here’s what you can do:

• Try increasing your texture budget. If it doesn’t help try to lower it instead and then increase it again.

• Lower other settings to free system resources for textures.

Other errors and issues

In most cases, clearing FiveM cache helps solving up issues. If you tried everything from the above, then uninstall and reinstall FiveM completely. Also, don’t forget to update the main GTA 5 game and FiveM itself.
