LoL Classic Runes - Complete Guide

LoL Classic brings back old-statted Rune Pages with Glyphs and Quintessences, so theorycrafting is going wild right now. In this LoL Classic Runes guide, I’ll explain how the system works, which Runes are worth using, and what I recommend buying first.

LoL Classic Runes TL;DR

  • A complete Rune Page uses 9 Marks, 9 Seals, 9 Glyphs, and 3 Quintessences.

  • Attack Damage, Attack Speed, and Magic Penetration Marks cover most damage dealers.

  • Armor Seals and Magic Resist Glyphs are the default defensive choices.

  • I recommend building one general AD page and one general AP page before buying more specialized Runes.

  • Flat Runes are usually better for early fighting, while scaling Runes overtake them around the middle of the game.

  • Movement Speed, Life Steal, and Gold Quintessences are useful, but I would buy them after the basic AD and AP options.

How LoL Classic Runes Work

LoL Classic uses the old Rune Book instead of the modern Keystone system. Modern classics like Electrocute, Conqueror, or First Strike are completely absent, and you’re faced with thirty individual stat bonuses to choose from. You save them pre-match as a page, and stats start passively working once the game begins.

I expected the returning system to feel dated, and parts of it definitely do, it’s a nostalgia mode after all, so it’s kinda bound to be janky. Searching through several rows of similar-looking icons is hardly thrilling, and having to spend IP on permanent combat stats belongs to an older kind of predatoryish free-to-play design. Still, I enjoy building pages more than I expected because the choices have an immediate effect on how a lane plays out and funnel into enhancing your playstyle.

 LoL Classic Runes

Modern Runes usually ask what additional effect I want my champion to trigger. Classic Runes are stats, and that’s that. You can sacrifice early Magic Resist for more Ability Power, take Life Steal to survive an annoying poke lane, or run Movement Speed because reaching the target is more important than adding another small damage bonus. Riot has also made the returning version less punishing than the original system - here’s the full post. Every purchased Rune uses the old Tier 3 strength, so there is no need to buy weak Runes and upgrade them later, which was way worse during the system’s original run. Players receive pages from several sources:

  1. three Rune Pages at the start

  2. two more through Classic Levels

  3. you can purchase additional pages using IP earned by playing.

Default pages are also available if you’re too lazy to premade one. There are nine Marks, nine Seals, nine Glyphs, and three Quintessences. Each category leans toward a particular group of stats, although Classic lets you use weaker off-category options when you really want to stack one bonus.

The raw bonuses may look small until you combine all thirty slots. Nine Attack Damage Marks and three Attack Damage Quintessences give enough AD to change how easily you last-hit and how proficient your trades are. That early influence is the biggest contrast with modern League’s system. Modern Keystones become more important once I start actively trading and working towards activating them, whereas Classic Runes are already doing their job right off the gate - stat differences are always there. To get the full roster unlocked, here’s what you’ll have to do:

  1. Marks become available at Classic Level 4

  2. Seals unlock at 6

  3. Glyphs are available to you at 7

  4. Quintessences at 8.

  5. Individual Runes cost IP, while an additional Rune Page costs 1,500 IP.

I would not rush to purchase more page slots. Three pages are enough for AD/AP setups, and one page for your main champion/role. Owning and actually spending time customizing more is for sweatier players.

Marks, Seals, Glyphs, and Quintessences Explained

Honestly, old Runes look more complicated than they really are. Most players will end up reusing a small number of reliable stats, with the specialized options reserved for particular champions or matchups.

My Take

Marks

Attack Damage, Attack Speed, Magic Penetration, Lethality

AD works for ADCs, AD top laners, and junglers. Attack Speed suits Master Yi, Warwick, and other basic-attack champions. Most mages want to stack as much Magic Penetration as possible.

Attack Damage and Magic Penetration are the first two sets I would buy. One Critical Chance Mark can be fun, but a full crit page is far too unreliable.

Seals

Flat Armor, Flat Health, Scaling Armor, Scaling Health

Armor is the safest option for ADCs, junglers, and physical lanes. Health works better against mixed damage, while scaling stats suit quieter matchups.

I use flat Armor on most pages because I feel its effect immediately. Gold Seals can work on supports, but giving up early defence often hurts more than the extra income helps.

Glyphs

Flat Magic Resist, Scaling Magic Resist, Ability Power, Cooldown Reduction

Flat MR suits mid laners, ADCs, and supports. Scaling MR works well on junglers and into physical top matchups. AP and CDR are greedier offensive options.

Magic Resist is my default. I only take AP Glyphs into physical or passive mids, and I usually mix a few CDR Glyphs instead of replacing the entire row.

Quintessences

Attack Damage, Ability Power, Movement Speed, Life Steal, Gold

AD and AP work across most carries. Movement Speed helps Singed, roaming supports, and slower junglers, and Life Steal is useful for ADCs facing a poke-heavy enemy lineup.

AD and AP are the best first purchases. Movement Speed is one of the more interesting options because it changes how a champion feels from level one, while Gold and Experience are much more specialized.

Gold Quintessences are a standout for me due to how universally good they are on supports. Three of them provide 3 gold per ten seconds, which helps with wards and early items but comes at the cost of combat stats. Experience Quintessences are much more specialized but could come in clutch for some specific champions with huge power spikes on certain levels.

Best LoL Classic Rune Pages

Since we’re limited in the amount of pages we can own, I would start with a few universal Rune Pages builds that you’ll use for several different champions without feeling weak in any way. This section lists the 4 best pages that most of the launch roster can use one:

AD Rune Page

This build gets you 15.75 Attack Damage in total, which makes last-hitting so much more comfortable and adds noticeable damage to early trades without sacrificing basic defenses:

  • Marks: 9 Attack Damage

  • Seals: 9 Armor

  • Glyphs: 9 Magic Resist

  • Quintessences: 3 Attack Damage

ADCs facing heavy poke can replace the Attack Damage Quintessences with Life Steal. Master Yi and Warwick can swap the Marks for Attack Speed, although I would keep the Armor Seals because the Classic jungle monsters can take a decent chunk of your health off during the first route.

Standard AP Rune Page

This AP build has enough early damage to make your spells threatening plus essential defensives:

  • Marks: 9 Magic Penetration

  • Seals: 9 Armor

  • Glyphs: 9 Magic Resist

  • Quintessences: 3 Ability Power

Against a physical mid laner, it’s worth replacing the Magic Resist Glyphs with flat or scaling Ability Power. Against another mage, I’d keep the defensives.

Attack Speed Jungle Rune Page

For junglers whose first route and DPS scaling depend heavily on basic attacks, this is their baseline. Attack Speed makes farming the opening camps smoother, plus Movement Speed helps with camp transitions and ganks.

  • Marks: 9 Attack Speed

  • Seals: 9 Armor

  • Glyphs: 9 Scaling Magic Resist

  • Quintessences: 3 Movement Speed

Warwick and Master Yi are the best fits. Lee Sin and Jarvan IV rely more on ability damage during the early game, so I keep them on the standard AD page. Fiddlesticks should use the AP setup with Magic Penetration Marks rather than trying to force an Attack Speed page.

Support Rune Page

Supports have 2 distinct archetypes in Classic League, so this section has two builds to choose from. Champs like Leona and Alistar benefit from the additional Armor because they have to walk into the enemy lane to do their job. Sona, Janna, and other ranged supports can use Magic Penetration Marks to make their poke more threatening without giving up the defensive Seals and Glyphs.

For tank and engage supports, use:

  • Marks: 9 Armor

  • Seals: 9 Armor

  • Glyphs: 9 Magic Resist

  • Quintessences: 3 Gold per 10 seconds

For ranged supports, use:

  • Marks: 9 Magic Penetration

  • Seals: 9 Armor

  • Glyphs: 9 Magic Resist

  • Quintessences: 3 Gold per 10 seconds

Gold Seals can increase passive income, but they’re more of a greedy choice. They are fine when the opposing lane cannot threaten a kill. But I think that if you’re getting out of position as a support, you’ll die anyway, so Gold is simply universally good.

The role table below is the starting point I use before making champion-specific changes. I still adjust it around the lane, especially in top and mid where the damage type can vary heavily.

Mid laners usually start with Magic Penetration Marks and AP Quintessences. The Glyph row is where I decide whether I want early defense, additional AP, or CDR. I avoid full damage pages when the opponent can realistically kill me before level six.

Which LoL Classic Runes Should You Buy First?

The worst way to spend IP is buying one copy of every interesting Rune. A decently built page generally wants nine matching runes, so you have to be strategic about your purchases. Recommended buying order is:

  1. 9 Armor Seals

  2. 9 Attack Damage Marks

  3. 9 Magic Penetration Marks

  4. 9 Magic Resist Glyphs

  5. 3 Attack Damage Quintessences

  6. 3 Ability Power Quintessences

  7. 9 Attack Speed Marks

  8. 3 Movement Speed Quintessences

  9. Role-specific Runes for your regular champions

After those basics, I would buy around my actual champion pool. ADC players can add Life Steal Quintessences, junglers can pick up Movement Speed, and supports can start building Gold pages. Scaling Glyphs are worth considering once the flat options are already available to you.
