PoE 2 Forbidden Rites Event Guide TL;DR:
-
Forbidden Rites launches with Patch 0.5.5 on September 4, 2026, at 1 PM PDT and runs all the way until Path of Exile 2 releases version 1.0 on December 11.
-
It is a separate event league with a fresh economy reset, so you must create a new character to participate.
-
Ritual sites are a gimmick of the event - lots of them appear throughout the campaign, plus the mechanic is slightly reworked.
-
Sacred Blooms open the Viridian Wildwood in Endgame Maps, where Wisps empower monsters and improve their rewards.
-
Patch 0.5.5 also overhauls the Trial of Chaos, adds Abyssal Ravines, accelerates Fortress completion, and makes Expedition permanent.

PoE 2 Forbidden Rites Event League Explained
Forbidden Rites is the final major Path of Exile 2 event before the game finally leaves Early Access. We still get the regular event league that has its own economy and eight event-exclusive challenges with decent cosmetics, and it also mixes up the leveling experience by placing lots of Ritual encounters throughout the campaign.
What makes me want to play the event the most is how the event connects its systems. Revamped campaign Rituals can solve early gearing problems and get your currencies going, and later on, Endgame Ritual rewards let you farm Viridian Wildwood.
The builds are largely unchanged - no major balance tweaks were made, so you can either choose the Forbidden Rites as a reset league or continue your gameplay in Runes of Aldur if you’re not interested in getting exclusive cosmetics and a fresh reset.
PoE 2 Forbidden Rites Release Date
Forbidden Rites begins on September 4, 2026, at 1 PM PDT. Patch 0.5.5 launches at the same time after a period of server maintenance, and the event continues until the Path of Exile 2 full release on December 11, 2026.
The duration is worth emphasizing because Forbidden Rites was easy to mistake for a one-month economy-reset event. GGG has clarified in the official Forbidden Rites FAQ that it will remain available until version 1.0 and end alongside Runes of Aldur. That gives us more than three months to level, complete the challenge track, and invest in the new Endgame systems.
It’s worth noting that the Runes of Aldur does not disappear when the event begins, so you can continue playing in the league and earn the challenge rewards. GGG clarified that the existing characters and challenges remain available until 1.0, so there are 3 whole months for you to wrap everything up. Thus, Forbidden Rites is an additional fresh-start option for players who want a new economy and a slightly different campaign loop.
PoE 2 Forbidden Rites Game Loop?

Forbidden Rites is a Ritual-focused event league that’s thematically built around the King in the Mists and the Nameless spreading their influence across Wraeclast. The core encounter is familiar, but rewards for the campaign are revamped. Instead of unique items, you can get currency and random items of varying rarity. The entire ritual-related campaign loop goes like this:
-
Find the Ritual Effigy while following the area's normal route.
-
Defeat the monsters around it and clear enough room to fight safely.
-
Activate the Effigy to resurrect the enemies.
-
Remain inside the Ritual boundary and avoid the plague effects.
-
Kill the resurrected monsters to earn Tribute.
-
Open the Ritual shop and choose a reward.
I would recommend you complete most Rituals that appear along the campaign route, especially during the opening Acts. Gear and currency you can get is super useful, especially if you’re playing on SSF. However, if finding the Effigy requires several minutes of backtracking and the character is already comfortably geared, moving to the next zone may be more efficient.
How Tribute and Ritual Rewards Work During the Event
Tribute is the temporary resource earned inside Ritual encounters. You gain it by killing resurrected monsters and spend it on the selection of items shown after the fight. Campaign Rituals during the league are changed to contain items that are meant to support character development, which means currency and non-unique gear upgrades that you can use during leveling.
My approach to early Tribute is simple: spend it on getting any item improvements you find and currency. A weapon that meaningfully increases damage, armor that fixes missing Resistances, or currency that completes an important craft can remove a real progression problem.
|
Priority |
What to Look For |
Why |
|---|---|---|
|
1 |
A major weapon or damage upgrade |
Faster clearing improves every part of progression |
|
2 |
Missing Elemental Resistances |
Ritual arenas quickly punish fragile characters |
|
3 |
+ Skill LvL gear and ms boots |
Huge DPS spike/ms increase can save you lots of time during leveling |
|
4 |
Life or Energy Shield recovery |
Helps a lot during crowded encounters and Ritual boss effigies clears |
|
5 |
Currencies |
Worth taking when immediate upgrades are unavailable |
Forbidden Rites also improves how Ritual rewards work in parties. Each member earns personal Tribute and receives individual reward choices rather than leaving the instance owner in control of the entire shop. Secondary party members who do not own the map will have fewer choices than the owner, but everyone gets their own piece of the pie. That makes group leveling feel much better, contrary to just watching one person decide how the combined effort is spent.
Once the campaign is finished, Ritual rewards gain another important purpose: Sacred Blooms can be used to open the Viridian Wildwood in Maps. At that point, Tribute is no longer only a way to patch gear. It becomes part of a larger Endgame investment loop, so I would start judging rewards by how well they support my chosen Atlas strategy.
Forbidden Rites Ritual Boss Effigies
Ritual boss clusters are the main feature that makes Forbidden Rites feel different from ordinary campaign Ritual effigies and could potentially make for a great experience with lots of nice leveling rewards. Special Boss Effigies appear in linked groups on the World Map and contain the campaign bosses. When you defeat a boss inside one of these Rituals, that boss carries forward into the next encounter in the cluster - not only do you get excellent boss drops, but your Ritual rewards change too, spawning exclusively uniques for you to purchase for Tribute.
If your build is decent enough, this new system allows you to get a chance at some of the most powerful leveling tools in uniques. Definitely worth clearing at least, and potentially reset farming. But I think there’s definitely a thin line between it being a nice leveling support and a massive waste of time.
The Viridian Wildwood in Forbidden Rites
Ritual system continues into Endgame and provides you with access to the returning Viridian Wildwood. A Sacred Bloom can appear in a Ritual reward window. Apply the Bloom to an Endgame Map, and the affected area gains a Wildwood entrance near its beginning. Inside the Wildwood, you have limited time to follow trails and gather Wisps. When you leave, those Wisps spread among monsters in the original Map. The enemies become more dangerous, but the type and amount of Wisps collected improve their potential rewards. This league is notorious for being an ultimate juicer, so if your build can take the empowered mobs, you’re basically guaranteed a massive payout. Here’s what each Wisp type does:
|
Wisp Type |
Effect |
|---|---|
|
Primal Wisp |
Can transform Normal monsters into Magic monsters |
|
Vivid Wisp |
Can add modifiers to Rare monsters |
|
Wild Wisp |
Increases the rarity of items dropped by monsters |
|
Sacred Wisp |
A rare fourth Wisp whose effect has not been revealed yet |
You can collect several Wisp types during the same map completion, allowing their effects to overlap. Ritual Tablets can also roll modifiers that increase the number of Wisps found in Wildwood areas. That creates obvious farming potential, but it can also make a Map much harder than its original modifiers suggest. As always, don’t overdo the buffs - test how each Wisp combination affects clear speed and your survival before adding Tablet investment.
Besides the Wilwood wisp chase, we’re also getting a new Abyssal Ravine mechanic that works as a streamlined group of maps with an Abyssal boss at the end of it. Could be something that’s fun to do for a couple of days, but I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, unless you really enjoy the Abyssal farm.
Forbidden Rites Challenges and Rewards

Forbidden Rites contains eight event challenges. The objectives revealed so far include completing campaign Rituals, defeating named Rare Monsters, reaching level 90, and progressing through other event content. The confirmed cosmetic challenge rewards are:
-
Locust Footprints Effect
-
Locust Swarm Finisher Effect
-
Wildwood Guardian Pet
-
Wildwood Affliction Level-up Effect
-
Forbidden Rites commemorative Hideout Statue
This is a much shorter challenge track than a full league, which makes perfect sense for an event. GGG's Patch 0.5.5 event announcement confirms the eight challenges, while the official Forbidden Rites overview lists the cosmetics and the currently revealed objectives.
