Midnight Prey System TL;DR
-
Prey is a solo-friendly outdoor endgame system where you hunt elite targets across Midnight zones for gear, currencies, and cosmetics.
-
There are three difficulties: Normal (easy entry), Hard (stacking damage and death penalties), and Nightmare (extra affixes and the toughest fights).
-
Weekly efficiency revolves around completing four Hunts, which yield the largest progress in Preyseeker’s Journey.
-
Rewards include Adventurer-track gear, upgrade materials, crafting components, and currency exchanged through Construct V’anore.
-
The Preyseeker’s Journey track unlocks mounts, transmog pieces, pets, and additional cosmetics over ten ranks.
BoEs, consumables, and day-to-day expenses are set to drain your gold super fast. You can skip the gold grind and cover expenses entirely - just buy WoW gold on Playhub. Best prices and secure delivery guaranteed.
How Prey Works in WoW Midnight
At its core, Prey is a contract-based hunt system set across Midnight’s expansion zones and working a lot like a normal world quest. You start them in Silvermoon City by picking a hunt from the familiar face, Astalor Bloodsworn. You then choose your target out of a wide variety of enemies - from rogue gnome tinkerers to Twilight ogres and Death Knights.
Astalor’s intel doesn’t cover the target’s exact position, so what you’ll get is an approximate location of your target, acting as a Prey-exclusive world quest. To fight your enemy, you’ll have to interrupt their operation and draw them out first. Alternatively, you can just explore the Zone, since lots of activities grant progress towards your Prey bar:
-
Completing any World Quets
-
Killing Elites
-
Opening Treasures
-
Deactivating Prey-related traps
-
Killing Anguished mobs (the ones glowing red)
What I’d recommend doing is to combine doing whatever activities are along your way to the Prey’s world quett zone, you’ll get lots of progress quickly that way. Also, check out the group finder; maybe someone’s running the same Prey as you, you’ll do it faster together. Beware, though, since your Prey targets are not going to just sit around while you hunt them down. They’ll ambush you from time to time, and to scare them off, you’ll have to bring their HP down to 50%, and several Prey ambushes may occur at the same time if you have several players in a group.
How to Unlock Prey and Difficulty Levels in WoW
You unlock Prey right away after unlocking Midnight’s Silvermoon City. A Prey: Astalor Initiative quest will pop up, acting as an introduction to the entire system. By completing the questline ending with a To the Sanctum! Quest, you’ll unlock a Normal difficulty, which hunts you’ll be able to complete even while leveling from 80 to 90.
Speaking of difficulties, Prey has three: Normal, Hard, and Nightmare.
-
Normal is the entry level and is designed to be friendly to casual outdoor play, with your character being able to complete it even while leveling.
-
Hard mode is when things escalate - you start getting damage which scales with time spent on the hunt, you start losing progress after dying on the hunt, and Seeping Gore ground effects start appearing on your path. Your target’s stats scale as well, making for a tougher fight than on Normal difficulty, and your rewards get better, too.
-
Nightmare is the hardest - all of Hard mode’s affixes apply, as well as Nightmare’s-exclusive Echo of Predation and Bloody Command affixes, with Echo creating stalking spirits continuously attacking you, and Bloody Command forcing you to kill an enemy or take damage for not doing it. Echo of Preadtion is a funny one, because there were Reddit threads complaining how bad it feels to be constantly jumped by mobs, but most players seem to like it.
This M+-esque design makes your runs more challenging and rewards more exciting. With how many bosses there are, your runs will feel fresh every time.

WoW Midnight Prey Rewards
The Midnight Prey system offers a layered reward structure that combines weekly progression, cosmetics, and progress towards your Great Vault weekly rewards. Between Hunt completions, the Preyseeker’s Journey track, currency exchanges, and even crafting recipes tied with the system, Prey is an excellent activity to invest your time in. It acts as a great early gearing path, especially for your alts, while also unlocking cosmetics for your collection.
Preyseeker’s Journey Progression
Much like Delves, Prey has its own seasonal progression track called the Preyseeker’s Journey. This track contains ten ranks, each unlocking new features, vendor items, or cosmetic milestones. Your first four Hunts each week provide the bulk of your progress, granting 1,000 Journey points each. After that, additional Hunts award a mere 50 points, which makes four weekly completions the most efficient approach if your goal is unlocking ranks quickly and just proceeding to other activities.
Journey ranks also grant access to rewards - some mounts and armor pieces cannot be purchased until you reach specific ranks, which naturally spaces out progression across several weeks of play.
Direct Hunt Rewards
Every completed Hunt grants a package of rewards designed to support both character power and long-term progression. The primary reward is the Preyseeker’s Adventurer Chest, which includes:
-
An Adventurer-track gear piece
-
Voidlight Marl, used at Renown quartermasters
-
Veteran Dawncrest upgrade materials, used to upgrade gear up to ilvl 243
-
A chance at Tormented Tantalum rare crafting component
Repeated weekly completions at the same difficulty continue to award progression but replace the main chest with a Preyseeker’s Adventurer Sack. The Sack contains similar materials but excludes gear, reinforcing the 4 runs weekly limit philosophy. So overall, I’d say it’s 4 Prey runs per week tops, then forget about it until the next reset.
Prey Rune Rewards

During Hunts, you may obtain Anguish Runes in three different tiers, which are later exchangeable with Constructor V’anore in Astalor’s Sanctum:
-
Anguish-Scribed Rune
-
Anguish-Infused Rune
-
Anguish-Permeated Rune
These runes can be exchanged with Construct V’anore inside Astalor’s Sanctum for several valuable currencies. The exchange options include:
-
Remnant of Anguish used for Prey-exclusive rewards
-
Voidlight Marl is exchangeable for renown items
-
Coffer Key Shards for bountiful Delves
-
Dawncrests, used to upgrade Hero gear up to lvl 269
This extensive currency exchange system adds flexibility to Prey rewards. Instead of receiving prey-related loot exclusively, you gain the ability to convert Hunt drops into resources that support upgrades, Delves, or crafting progression.
Transmog Rewards
V’anore sells four full armor ensembles that can be purchased without rank requirements, allowing players to start collecting cosmetics right away. Additional cosmetic pieces unlock later and act as visual upgrades tied to Journey progression.

The design here rewards steady progression rather than burst farming. Players can begin with full ensembles early and then enhance their look as new ranks unlock.
Profession Recipes
Prey also integrates with Enchanting and Inscription, giving crafters additional goals beyond gear upgrades. Recipes require at least level 50 in the relevant profession and cost both Remnants of Anguish and Artisan Moxie crafting reagents.

These recipes provide meaningful combat-focused upgrades, reinforcing Prey’s hybrid identity as both progression and collection content. As an Enchanter, that’s an additional reason to run Preys for me. BTW, for a comprehensive crafting guide, you can check out our Midnight professions guide.
Mounts, Pets, and Toy Rewards

The most sought-after rewards in the Prey system are the mounts and companions tied to higher Journey ranks. Some items can be purchased immediately, while others serve as long-term goals.

Mounts and Pets rewards are great, Voldy is a great pet def worth chasing IMO. Devs clearly want players to play prey since they put a huge emphasis on rewards.
Great Vault Integration
Beyond direct rewards, Prey Hunts contribute toward the “World” row of the Great Vault. Completing Hunts at greater difficulties improves the potential quality of weekly Vault rewards, making Prey a valuable option even for players focused primarily on gearing rather than cosmetics, at least early in the Expansion.
Midnight’s Prey Achievements
Prey also comes with a large achievement set, including difficulty-based boss clears, “do weird things while doing Prey” objectives, and meta achievements that reward titles and unique cosmetics. Some of them are easy, and you can do several of them in the same run, and some are chase-style achievements, which will take you weeks to complete, so the best approach is to do them gradually while grinding for currencies.
