Modern Warfare 4 Weapon Tier List TL;DR
-
M4 is the best balanced pick: adaptable enough for most Multiplayer maps without forcing you to play at one specific fighting distance.
-
ISO Nightshade is the best aggressive SMG, with an insane 175 ms base ADS time after the beta handling update.
-
Kastov 762 rewards good recoil control on your side, and its Kastov 545 Apex conversion gives you another way to build the platform.
-
X-58 Nyx suits a flanking playstyle, and Oris 8.6 is best when used by accurate, mobile players.
-
Han 86 is a sensible early rifle. Apex Attachments unlock through weapon progression and can change what a gun is good at.

Modern Warfare 4 Weapon Tier List

The M4 and ISO Nightshade are the two guns most players should level first. Between them, you have an adaptable rifle and an SMG for the tighter fights, which covers a lot of ordinary Multiplayer. The rest of the ranking I’ve filled with guns that do their specific job particularly well: recoil control, precision, or an Apex conversion that changes its role. Here are my recommendations for choosing a primary:
|
Tier |
Weapons |
|---|---|
|
S-Tier |
M4, ISO Nightshade, Kastov 762, X-58 Nyx, Oris 8.6 |
|
A-Tier |
Han 86, Hyeon Burst, Patriot XMR, Rezi 12, KG-7 Vulcan, Signal .50 |
|
B-Tier |
PPSh-41, Type 73, FiNN LMG, MAR-9 |
B-Tier weapons are as usable as any other tier, just not as OP. If you enjoy the weapon, there’s no reason to not use it, and some of them are situationally very good. For example, a Type 73 defending an open lane can be more useful than an SMG trying to do the same job.
Top 5 Best Weapons in Modern Warfare 4
My top five include two assault rifles, two SMGs, and a marksman rifle. You get a selection that you can use comfortably at any range:
1. M4

|
Class |
Maximum base damage |
Maximum-damage range |
Base sprint-to-fire time |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Assault Rifle |
24 |
Up to 26.3 m |
180 ms |
The M4 gets my overall best pick because it asks relatively little of your choice of map or mode; it just sprays and gets kills at any distance. It leaves you room to change the build and fit any role without switching a weapon.
The M4 Hurricane Apex conversion offers a different direction for the platform, but the ordinary M4 already earns its place at the top of the rankings. The main thing to avoid is treating that versatility as permission to take every fight; I don’t think that you’ll outshoot a sniper at an extreme distance, and an SMG will shred you faster up-close.
2. ISO Nightshade - Best SMG

|
Class |
Maximum base damage |
Maximum-damage range |
Base ADS time |
|---|---|---|---|
|
SMG |
21 |
Up to 10.1 m |
175 ms |
The ISO Nightshade makes the most sense when you like to make matters close and personal. Its fast handling is useful there, and those close fights are where an SMG absolutely justifies taking it over an assault rifle. GamesRadar’s MW4 best-weapons coverage also identifies the Nightshade as a standout close-range choice, and there’s no reason to debate it.
That 10-meter maximum-damage range is worth remembering - you can kill an enemy further than that in some situations, but it becomes difficult to outplay an enemy using an AR or a sniper that also shoots at you. You’ll get more value from this weapon by moving cover-to-cover and shortening the next engagement than from repeatedly challenging a rifle across open ground.
For attachments, handling and manageable recoil are the best priorities when building this gun out. A larger magazine can be useful for long killstreks and objective fights, that is, if the handling trade-off still feels acceptable to you.
3. Kastov 762

|
Class |
Maximum base damage |
Maximum-damage range |
Base sprint-to-fire time |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Assault Rifle |
30 |
Up to 24.1 m |
190 ms |
The classic AK vs M4 contest is back in MW4. The Kastov has more damage per hit than the M4, but the downside comes with its recoil, which demands more skill to use. That makes this gun great when you can keep the shots together, but a higher damage number doesn’t compensate for rounds going past someone’s shoulder. Anyone who finds the M4 comfortable and wants a heavier-hitting alternative has a good reason to try Kastov.
The Kastov 545 Apex conversion is another reason to level the platform. It changes the ammunition and handling characteristics, making the weapon basically a laser gun that feels smooth as butter.
4. X-58 Nyx
|
Class |
Maximum base damage |
Maximum-damage range |
Base ADS time |
|---|---|---|---|
|
SMG |
22 |
Up to 10.8 m |
180 ms |
The X-58 Nyx earns its place through the quieter, controlled approach to the fight it has. Its inherently suppressed design and low recoil suit players who work around a fight and attack from another angle. That gives it a different purpose from the Nightshade, even though both occupy the same weapon class. The documented base profile reaches maximum damage out to 10.8 meters, with ADS reduced to 180 ms during beta tuning.
Its X-58 Void Apex option goes even further into that playstyle by hiding enemy death skulls on the minimap and reducing directional information given to the target. That makes a flank even harder to read, especially when the other team is not communicating through VC.
5. Oris 8.6

|
Class |
Action |
Maximum base damage |
Maximum-damage range |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Marksman Rifle |
Bolt-action |
95 |
Up to 19 m |
Oris 8.6 is the marksman pick in the top five. Its compact bolt-action design suits precise shots taken while moving between positions, but missing is much more costly than it is with an automatic. Damage depends on range and hit location, so the 95 damage number is not a one-shot-kill insurance.
This gun also gets a cool twist - the Razor Apex gets this gun a close-range fallback with deployable kunai for some close-range encounters. WHile the Oris earns S-Tier for the player who can use its precision consistently; the M4 remains the easier to get value from recommendation.
The damage and handling figures above come from Infinity Ward’s official beta patch notes. They describe separate weapon characteristics: ADS and sprint-to-fire times aren’t kill-time measurements.
Best MW4 Weapons by Class
I’ve put together an overall ranking in this section that helps when you want one primary to invest in that does a specific job:
|
Weapon class |
Best Pick |
Alternative |
|---|---|---|
|
Assault Rifle |
M4 |
Kastov 762 or Han 86 |
|
SMG |
ISO Nightshade |
X-58 Nyx |
|
Shotgun |
Rezi 12 |
- |
|
LMG |
Type 73 |
FiNN LMG |
|
Marksman Rifle |
Oris 8.6 |
MAR-9 |
|
Sniper Rifle |
KG-7 Vulcan |
Signal .50 |
KG-7 Vulcan is the best multiplayer sniper recommendation, but Signal .50 deserves to get at least some flowers on larger maps. As for secondaries, Krait P68 is the default pistol recommendation, but .50 GS looks to me like a more powerful but skill-dependent alternative.
Best Early Weapon in Modern Warfare 4
Han 86 is the best early rifle because its general-purpose role lets you learn the maps without building your whole approach to exploring around a specialist weapon. ISO Nightshade is the other early choice for players who already know they prefer close-range fights. Both were available immediately in the beta, and you get your second milestone, M4, unlocked at Player Rank 9; the release menu is the place to check the final requirements. I think that the best thing to do starting out is to level one automatic gun you enjoy first and get it decently kitted out, and follow this weapon order:
-
Han 86 or ISO Nightshade first. The choice depends on whether you prefer mixed-distance fights or tighter routes.
-
M4 when it becomes available. It gives you a flexible rifle to comfortably play without extra sweating as you learn the maps.
-
Apex progression on a gun you like the most.
Gunny can help while your attachment collection is still small. Activision’s Multiplayer systems overview explains that its suggested builds use attachments you already own and change as more become available. A balanced recommendation gives you something to play with right away, and then you can replace whichever part you don’t like.
Best Apex Attachments

Apex Attachments give weapons another life and make the grind feel even more rewarding. They unlock at the end of a weapon progression and are placed completely separately from the ordinary Gunsmith slots. Some change how the gun fires, others add a utility option, so a base weapon and its Apex version can have what feels like completely different uses. Here are some of the best attachments to look out for:
|
Weapon |
Apex |
Why It’s Good |
|---|---|---|
|
M4 |
Hurricane |
Different handling and fire-rate direction for the platform |
|
Kastov 762 |
Kastov 545 |
Changes the ammunition and gives the rifle a different feel |
|
X-58 Nyx |
Void |
Makes a flanking approach harder for opponents to read |
|
Hyeon Burst |
Auto / Hyperburst |
Gives the burst platform alternative firing behavior |
|
Type 73 |
Assault |
Explosive-ammunition |
Hyeon Burst is a good example of why the default version of a gun now doesn’t tell the whole story. A player who dislikes burst rifles may find an automatic conversion more comfortable, and someone who enjoys bursts may prefer to keep that style. We get more control of our guns, and more options are always better.
