How to Start Talebound
Talebound is a standalone PvE action-RPG mode coming with WoW Midnight Patch 12.1.7: Echoes of the Worldcore. You create a separate character, choose Slayer, Inquisitor, or Witch, and play through the Storyteller’s Tales, returning to Quillgrave between attempts to improve your character. The rewards include cosmetics for your regular WoW collection, which is a pretty good reason to spend an evening or two fighting monsters.
Talebound uses its own ready-to-play character creation system. You choose the mode from WoW’s menus, create a character, and pick one of its three classes. Your introduction begins in Red Hollow, where you meet the Storyteller before entering the world around Quillgrave. The entire thing is being sort of told by the storyteller this way, so there’s no telling what’s lore-accurate and what’s not inside the Talebound.
The next opportunity to play is the PTR demo from October 30 to November 1, 2026. Blizzard’s demo announcement confirms that you don’t need an active subscription for this test. That date is the demo window, not the full release date for Patch 12.1.7.

I’d use the test to learn the enemies and see as much content as possible. The demo progress or rewards won’t be transferred to live WoW, so there’s no reason to spend that weekend grinding currency and stuff.

Talebound Classes: Which Should You Play?
The three classes revealed right now are completely unique - they have their own ability kits, they’re not just reskinned versions of your normal WoW spec. The theme of Talebound is BFA’s sort of haunted Victorian era with witches and witchunters, and classes reflect that in full. Slayer class mixes melee and firearms in almost a traditional witchunter style; Inquisitor fights with holy damage and fire, and Witch uses, well, witchcrafting spells, creatures, and shapeshifting. My advice would be to try a Slayer because it’ll let you experience the mobs up close, where you’ll learn the attack patterns and timings to make your time playing easier on every other class.
|
Class |
What you’re playing |
Standout Abilities |
|---|---|---|
|
Slayer |
Sword-and-gun monster hunter |
Slash, Explosive Shot, Minefield, Throwing Knives |
|
Inquisitor |
Holy caster with burns and charged damage |
Condemn, Denounce, Rapture, Radiant Burst |
|
Witch |
Spellcaster with summons and a cat transformation |
Bubbling Cauldron, Feline Communion, Winter Spiders, Moonlight Ravens |
Slayer
Slayer’s Slash is a three-attack sequence, with extra damage and a stun on the final hit. That makes finishing the combo attractive, but I wouldn’t stay in an incoming boss attack just to land the last swing. The rest of the kit gives you ways to change position instead: Minefield jumps backward while dropping slowing mines, and Throwing Knives can cancel another attack into quick movement.
Explosive Shot rewards getting close enough for multiple shotgun projectiles to connect. My first experiment would be using that close-range damage window, then making space with the movement tools when the enemy starts attacking. Slayer looks appealing if you enjoy weaving attacks and movement together instead of holding one position.
Inquisitor
Inquisitor has an interesting split between moving casts and standing still for damage. Condemn and Radiant Burst can be used while moving, while Denounce rewards a longer stationary channel. That gives you something to do while repositioning without making every damage window depend on standing your ground.
For a first boss attempt, I’d learn the attack pattern with the mobile abilities before trying to squeeze in longer Denounce casts. Getting greedy with a channel is familiar territory for anyone who plays a caster in regular WoW. Rapture also gives you a manual detonation to manage, so there’s more to the kit than aiming holy fire at the nearest enemy.
Witch
Witch is the one I’m most interested in for sheer spell variety. Bubbling Cauldron sends out exploding frogs, Winter Spiders produces a swarm with an exploding brood mother, and Feline Communion turns you into a cat with access to the Crooked Path blink. There’s a lot going on visually, and the movement tools should be worth learning as early as the damage spells.
Moonlight Ravens can be channeled while moving, which is the ability I’d pay particular attention to during boss attempts. Being able to keep dealing damage while making room for an attack is useful. I wouldn’t rank Witch above the other classes before testing, though; the demo announcement specifically says that some talents are still being worked on.
Combat Tips for Your First Runs
Every class has double jump, dodge, and guard, so spend a little time learning those buttons and their timings to not get overwhelmed during a boss fight. The class kits are also something you should get comfortable with before tackling harder content: some attacks reward staying close, others let you move while casting, and some ask you to commit to a longer stationary cast animation. Knowing how to actually get these spells off and when to weave them in against specific enemies is how you’ll complete harder difficulties. For my first attempts, the priorities are:
-
Learn the movement controls on Normal. Get comfortable attacking, dodging, and guarding before increasing the difficulty.
-
Check which attacks let you move. Inquisitor’s mobile casts and Witch’s Ravens are some of them.
-
Figure out a safe window for longer attacks.
A great early goal is to learn each kit well enough to tell whether you’re missing out on some of the damage, surviving poorly, or simply spending too much time staying out of range.
All Talebound Tales and Bosses
Blizzard has announced four Tales, each with its own setting and boss roster. You can revisit them afterward, with Quillgrave keeping collections of the stories if you want to hear them again. The demo left out Grove of the Night Court, so here’s everything available at demo:
|
Tale |
Announced bosses |
In the October demo? |
|---|---|---|
|
Darkhaven |
Konrad von Sonnesheim, the Lord Marshal; Alexandre Dozsenc, the Blood Bishop |
Yes |
|
Greenthistle Wood |
Granny Greenthumb; Ylska Vilefang; Mobog, the Giant of Greenthistle |
Yes |
|
Greywake’s Expedition |
Zzyg’th, the Hadal Tyrant; Chathoa, the Herald from Beyond |
Yes |
|
Grove of the Night Court |
Tilywth, the Fairy Queen; Maernok, the Nightmare King |
No |
Some of the names on the list could be familiar to you if you played during BFA. If you think about it, it’s not the worst theme for this sort of game mode, but maybe we’ll see something more classic-coded in the next iterations of this roguelike experience.
Quillgrave Upgrades and Progression
Quillgrave is a classic roguelike hub-town where you prepare between Tales. Its four specialists improve different parts of your character and the tools available during runs. Blizzard’s Talebound overview explains the jobs of each specialist:
|
Specialist |
What they improve |
What you should get first |
|---|---|---|
|
Arcanist |
Potions, draughts, and flasks that can appear during Tales |
More consumable options for the run |
|
Scribe |
Talents that modify your abilities |
Changes to the spells and attacks you use most |
|
Outfitter |
Starting health, damage, energy, and focus |
A stronger statline even before entering a Tale |
|
Antiquarian |
Passive bonuses |
Passives that work with the rest of your choices |
The Scribe is where you’ll get the most impactful changes to your kit. When the kit already feels good, but the character is struggling to survive or finish fights, the Outfitter becomes more interesting.
Ducats and Bound Silver Explained
Talebound has two currencies - one is used for upgrades in Talebound, and the other lets you purchase warbound-wide cosmetics.
|
Currency |
Main purpose |
|---|---|
|
Ducats |
Resources needed for Talebound progression |
|
Bound Silver |
Transmog and other cosmetic purchases in the Talebound store |
Blizzard told us that quests, achievements, and progress through the Storyteller’s Tales are sources of Bound Silver. You can visit Nib in Quillgrave to shop, or access the Talebound store through character selection and the Game Menu. For collecting, I’d check the price of the reward I want before buying smaller pieces. There’s no verified Bound Silver-per-hour route yet, so claims about an exact number of runs to finish the store would be premature.
Talebound Rewards: Mounts, Transmog, and Housing Decor

You get some extremely unique rewards from talebound, especially on the mounts side. The Shadowbound Storybook is the reward that caught my attention first, as well as a Woodland Wandererer hedgehog. Housing also gets named rewards, including the Storyteller’s lectern and a Shadowtome decoration. These rewards are directly featured in Blizzard’s Echoes of the Worldcore preview and other sources:
