Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Weapon Tier List TL;DR
-
M4 is the most balanced pick; Han 86 is a strong alternative for PvP encounters.
-
PPSh-41 and ISO Nightshade lead the SMGs rankings.
-
Type 73 is the best LMG pick for fighting AI, but FiNN offers even more ammunition to go through before a reload.
-
KG-7 Vulcan is the best sniper, but I’d definitely bring an automatic weapon alongside it.
-
You’ll have to extract Weapon Manuals to unlock a weapon for a Gunsmith purchase. Extracting a gun only gives you that copy.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Weapon Tier List

The M4 is the gun you won’t regret putting your money into first. It fits best in a loadout beside an SMG or a sniper and works well in any part of the map you might find yourself fighting in. Other great guns like Han 86, PPSh-41, ISO Nightshade, and Type 73 round out S-Tier - they all have some standout properties you won’t find in other weapons:
|
Tier |
Weapons |
|---|---|
|
S-Tier |
M4, Han 86, PPSh-41, ISO Nightshade, Type 73 |
|
A-Tier |
Kastov 762, X-58 Nyx, FiNN LMG, KG-7 Vulcan, Signal 50, MAR-9, Oris 8.6, Rezi 12 |
|
B-Tier |
Hyeon Burst, Patriot XMR, VEL 46, Oden, Axion, Cronen Squall, APOC-338 |
|
C-Tier |
Wz.55 Striga, Warlord, Mosin-Nagant, Astaroth .57 |
Some guns clearly perform better in PvP than PvE and vice versa. WZStats’ DMZ PvP rankings currently put the Han 86 and PPSh-41 at the top of their weapons classes. But in my ranking, I valued performance in both PVE and PVP fights, since swapping guns for either is not something you’ll realistically do in your games.
Best MW4 DMZ Weapons to Use

These are the weapons I would build around for different playstyles. The recommendations include a sniper below S-Tier because a sniper’s place in your kit basically forces you to bring another gun in, and I’d rather leave a slot empty to take a looted gun out. Most of the time, a well-kitted assault rifle can carry most of a deployment; a scoped bolt-action is not as convenient, unless you’re absolutely cracked.
M4: Best Overall Weapon

The M4 earns its spot through how easily it fits into any situation and any playstyle. Its 30-round base magazine is probably the biggest downside for me personally, but for most people it seems more than enough. The more attachments you use, the better the gun gets, and its balanced baseline allows you to build basically anything out of it - from a pseudo SMG to a long-range rifle.
IF you’re bringing two weapons with you, M4 + ISO Nightshade is perfect for close-to-mid-range fights, and M4 + KG-7 Vulcan is an excellent sniper loadout.
Han 86: Best Alternative for PvP

Han 86 belongs beside the M4 near the top. It’s just as good, if not better, for players who prefer how it shoots, so there is little reason to spend Cash forcing an M4 into the same job. What I like about the gun is how clear the iron sights are - for some reason, they feel so much better to use than most of the options out there in the list.
What makes the Han stand out early on in the game’s lifecycle is its 60 Round Drum at weapon level 10, compared with level 39 for the M4’s equivalent magazine. Both start with 30 rounds, so the upgrade makes a noticeable difference when you’re clearing AI before a player fight, and even the player squad fights get considerably easier when you have more rounds in between reloads.
With a PPSh-41 alongside it, the Han can handle the street fights while the SMG handles the AI-filled rooms. Just put an optic and the larger magazine on the rifle before spending heavily on close-range handling. The Han’s attachment unlocks give you a good reason to keep leveling it even if the M4 is your eventual favorite.
PPSh-41: Best SMG for PvP

The PPSh starts with 71 rounds, compared with the Nightshade’s 30. That makes up for a huge difference in DMZ’s fights where you’ll find yourself fighting both AI and players at the same time. With a mag like this, you can take down an entire squad without reloading, which is huge if you’re playing with randoms
If you prefer Nightshade, its 40 Round Mag unlocked at weapon level 10, and that’s an early upgrade definitely worth buying for DMZ.
Type 73: Best LMG for AI Encounters

Type 73 fires faster than the FiNN, but the FiNN can keep shooting much longer. You get 60 rounds with the Type 73 versus 100 with the FiNN, and that works out to roughly 4.4 seconds of continuous fire versus 10.2 seconds before running the mag empty.
My Type 73 recommendation is for the gameplay where your squad can cover longer reloads. If you’re regularly left dealing with the entire AI group yourself, the FiNN’s longer belt is a good reason to choose it instead. I think it’s warranted to bring an SMG alongside either one. When a player pushes during the reload, switching weapons gives you a realistic chance of fighting back.
KG-7 Vulcan: Best Sniper Pick

KG-7 has a 10-round magazine against Signal 50’s seven, but Signal fires much faster: 111 RPM against 41, making it feel more like a marksman than a sniper. The KG-7 gives you more shots between reloads, but Signal has a faster TTK.
Pair it with an M4 or some other AR. That lets you clear buildings and deal with nearby AI without trying to force every encounter through the sniper scope. A sniper-and-SMG setup is more dependent on teammates covering the fights between those weapons’ preferred ranges.
Other DMZ Weapons Worth Keeping
These are some guns I ranked lower that still have a clear place in a kit:
-
Kastov 762: Worth trying if you want heavier individual hits for more of a precision-based gameplay, but it still starts with the same 30-round magazine as the M4.
-
X-58 Nyx: Its integrated suppressor makes it appealing for looting runs where you want to avoid PvP, but otherwise the statline feels a bit underwhelming compared to the best guns on the list.
-
MAR-9 and Oris 8.6: MAR-9 is semi-automatic, while Oris is bolt-action. Choose MAR-9 if you want repeated shots without cycling; keep Oris if you prefer the bolt-action style.
-
Rezi 12: A decent indoor close-range gun. Enforcer is especially useful, but It’ll take you some time to unlock it.
And always try to check what guns are dropping for you in your deployments. A well-equipped extracted gun is way better than a stock S-Tier one.
Best Weapon Loadouts for MW4 DMZ
Since you can carry two primaries without Overkill, you’re bound to bring in two if you don’t want to bring out an extra gun in the empty slot. The default setup is a rifle and SMG because both are very useful in DMZ to cover the two ranges you’re usually fighting in. You can also bring a sniper when you actually plan to use the longer sightlines and enjoy the playstyle.
|
Pairing |
Use Case |
|---|---|
|
M4 + ISO Nightshade |
M4 for outdoor fights; Nightshade for interiors and close pushes |
|
Han 86 + PPSh-41 |
Open the fight with the Han, then switch to PPSh before entering the building |
|
Type 73 + X-58 Nyx |
Type 73 for sustained AI fights; Nyx when moving indoors or caught reloading |
|
KG-7 Vulcan + M4 |
KG-7 for overwatch; M4 for clearing the route and nearby enemies |
For solo runs, I definitely prefer M4 and Nightshade. In a squad, you can afford to miss some sniper shots, so you have extra freedom to bring the specialist weapon. If you’re looking for a Multiplayer Loadouts guide, here’s one.
How to Unlock DMZ Weapons
In order to get access to a specific weapon purchase, you need to extract a rifle Manual first. The system is completely separated from multiplayer - even a weapon fully leveled in Multiplayer still needs its Manual before you can buy replacements in DMZ. What manuals you get is RNG, but if you’re faced with a choice, the best manuals are:
-
M4 or Han 86 .
-
Your preferred SMG.
-
An LMG, shotgun, or sniper.
The Gunsmith opens at DMZ level 10. The official FOB guide puts a base M4 at around 5,000 DMZ Cash, with attachment slots and attachments charged separately. The more slots you unlock, the more expensive they get, so the final slot can wait if buying it leaves you completely broke and without any cash to buy weapons in case of a death.
Gunsmith purchases support five attachments, but looted weapons can have up to eight slots. Once again, make sure to check the guns dropping in your games; they could be infinitely better compared to the regular crafted ones.
