4-2-2-2 is great for fast rushes through the middle.
-
4-3-2-1 has the strongest midfield control on this list.

Best FC 27 Formations Ranked

It’s hard to say what’s going to be stronger going into the later FC 27 meta, so I would not trust anyone calling one tactic code completely broken yet. But some early setups are time-tested ideas that worked in many previous games. The six formations below are reliable options to start. Each one already worked for clear reasons in previous FC games, and FC 27’s has rolled out changes that give us a decent idea of what should carry over to this meta from the previous ones. Here are the best formations in FC 27:
|

5 |

6 |
4-1-2-1-2 Narrow |

I’ve put 4-2-3-1 first because it’s just a balanced option that doesn’t have glaring weaknesses. But once you know how FC 27 feels, the narrower attacking setups may turn out to be stronger.
4-2-3-1 Wide: Best FC 27 Formation
The 4-2-3-1 Wide always has somebody protecting the middle, but you still get enough bodies around the box to create chances. What I like most about this formation is how easily you can spot your own mistakes. If counters keep coming through the middle, one CDM is probably moving too high. If the striker never touches the ball, the CAM is sitting too deep or both wide players are hugging the touchline.
And since FC 27 cuts AI defending assistance, a CDM who steps too high no longer gets bailed out by auto-recovery. The gap stays open until you manually cover it - which is another reason role choice in this formation impacts the game more now than it did in FC 26

The only striker you run needs to be fit for doing more than running in behind - a forward who can receive the ball and bring the CAM into play feels like a more solid play in this formation.
4-4-2: Best Formation for Beginners
The 4-4-2 is the basic choice, perfect for players who are only learning the ropes. You get two banks of four and two actual strikers up front, making passing lanes easy, and the wide midfielders help you make your defense decent. It’s also a comfortable setup for anyone coming from FC 26 - there is nothing to relearn.

I would also avoid using two similarly styled strikers - pairing an Advanced Forward with a False 9 gives you much cleaner attacks. It’s a simple and easy-to-execute setup, but that is exactly why 4-4-2 keeps winning every year.
4-2-2-2: Best Formation for Fast Attacks
The classic 4-2-2-2 formation has always worked well for players who like to put a pedal on the gas and get forward quickly. Two CAMs sit behind two strikers, so a turnover can become a four-player attack almost instantly; plus, the recycling is much faster than in a 4-2-3-1.

Its weakness is how wide the formation gets, since the CAMs naturally drift toward the middle, leaving the full-backs to stretch the pitch. Let one full-back go while the other stays conservative. Sending both at once can result in one bad pass leaving your CDMs defending half the field. The CAM pairing also needs a bit of thought to perform best.
4-3-2-1: Best Formation for Midfield Control
The 4-3-2-1 was one of those formations in FC 26 that could feel horrible to play against when used properly. It fills the center with three midfielders, then places two narrow forwards around a striker. You can keep the ball easily, and there are usually three attackers close enough to pass the ball near the box.
Your midfield roles matter a lot here. Give one player the holding job, use a real box-to-box option beside them, and let the third midfielder create. If all three are set to roam or attack, they end up standing in similar spaces and the whole advantage disappears.

The front three play narrow, which means your full-backs provide most of the width. Again, do not send both at the same time. This formation gets much better when you stop forcing the final pass. Move the ball through the midfield triangle and wait for a defender to step out. The narrow forward can then enter the empty channel. Fast full-backs with 80+ pace and 75+ stamina make this setup much easier to run for a full 90 minutes.
4-3-3 Holding: Best Wing Play Formation
I think 4-3-3 Holding could be more useful in FC 27 than it was last year, mainly because of the crossing rework. Crosses now go into space more often, and the player’s aim and power have a bigger effect. That should reward proper wing play instead of firing the same assisted ball toward the striker every time.
The formation gives both wingers a natural starting position. A dedicated CDM stays behind the two central midfielders, so you can move the ball patiently without leaving the center completely empty. It is especially comfortable when the opponent keeps packing the middle.

Striker |
Target Forward or Advanced Forward |
The striker choice depends on what the wingers are doing. A Target Forward makes sense if you cross often. An Advanced Forward fits cutbacks and balls behind the defense. If both wingers move inside, one full-back needs to overlap or the entire attack becomes cramped.
One CM should also support the box. Leaving both midfielders deep protects you well, but the striker ends up surrounded. Let the box-to-box player arrive late while the Playmaker stays available for another pass.
4-1-2-1-2 Narrow: Best Two-Striker Formation
Try 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow if you hate playing around the touchline. The diamond keeps a CDM, two CMs, and a CAM packed through the middle. Add two strikers, and nearly every player involved in the attack has a close passing option. When everything clicks, you can pass straight through teams before they settle into their defensive block.

False 9, Build-Up |
Of course, there is basically no width here. Good opponents will crowd the middle and wait for a bad pass. Full-backs can help, but turning both into attacking wingbacks is asking to get countered.
Keep a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 preset ready. If the diamond stops working, switching wide can change the match without needing different players. Repeating the same blocked central pass for 90 minutes is not a game plan.
How to Adjust Any FC 27 Formation
Start on Balanced and play a few matches before tweaking stuff. One ugly loss does not mean the formation is cooked - figure out what keeps going wrong, then change the role responsible for the most problems:
-
Getting countered through the middle: keep another midfielder back.
-
Striker is isolated: move the CAM or second forward closer.
-
Opponent blocks the center: add a Winger role or switch wide.
-
Full-backs keep getting exposed: lower their attacking freedom.
-
Possession goes nowhere: use a roaming Playmaker.
-
The press arrives too late: raise the line in small steps.
I’d save at least three setups. Keep one normal tactic, one safer version for protecting a lead, and one aggressive option for the final 20 minutes. A wide backup is also useful if the opponent refuses to leave the middle open.
