WoW Forever Leveling TL;DR
-
The level cap is 60, just like in Classic, and zones don’t scale to your character. Questing is the main source of XP - try to move between quest hubs doing several at once.
-
While questing is how you get most of your XP, doing dungeons with all associated quests is a great way of getting good gear and decent XP quickly.
-
Riverglades zone now covers much of the mid-30s to mid-40s, giving both factions another leveling option during the middle levels.
-
Keep food buffs active, use camp features, and allocate your Legacy talents once you earn your first points.

How Leveling Works in WoW Forever
Forever has the same 1-60 leveling journey, but it adds more than 1,000 quests across new and existing zones. That added content smoothes up your experience by a lot, making finding your new objectives much easier.
Dungeon leveling has changed too, and it’s the biggest change of the bunch. Forever shifted more of the XP reward toward dungeon quests, then reduced their bonus XP above normal quest values by 50% during beta. That cut affects the extra reward, not the entire quest payout. Later during the test, Dungeon creature XP received an 20% increase, so dungeon grinding could still be something you might choose to do, but it’s nowhere near as powerful as it was during Classic. You really have to make sure to collect all dungeon quests before going in, then decide whether another run is worth it based on the remaining quests, useful drops you have a change of getting, and time you might spend finding a group. Four new zones cover different stages of progression:
|
New zone |
Where it fits |
What it adds |
|---|---|---|
|
Zephras Isle |
Levels 1–12 |
The Skyborne starting experience before joining the Alliance or Horde route |
|
Riverglades |
Much of the mid-30s to mid-40s |
More than 150 quests, faction settlements, Powderfuse Port, and Krol’dok Stronghold |
|
Shen’dralas |
Not yet revealed, but it's somewhere in the 38-45 range based on quests level |
New adventures between Mulgore and Desolace, following the centaur conflicts and the history of the Shen’dralar |
|
Mount Hyjal |
Level-60/endgame content in current preview coverage |
Quests set after Archimonde’s defeat and access to the Hyjal Summit raid |
Riverglades changes the middle of your leveling route which could feel rough in the Classic. Hyjal gives you another destination once you reach the cap to mix up the high level experience. These additions are a good reason to check new quest chains instead of following an old Classic guide step for step - personally, I”d definitely rather explore the new zones instead of grinding the old ones for another time.

WoW Forever Leveling Routes for Alliance and Horde
Thanks to new zones and smoothed out level thresholds, you now have more route variance than ever before. The routes below give you an order of quest hubs, including the trips between them. The level brackets could be a bit off: dungeon runs and extra quest chains can put you ahead, and vice versa - skipping group quests can leave you slightly behind. As you might know, at later levels both factions start to level in contested areas, so their routes cross.
Alliance Leveling Route
For Humans, the main route runs through Elwynn → Westfall → Redridge → Duskwood → Wetlands → Arathi → Riverglades. That keeps most of your early leveling condensed in the Eastern Kingdoms, with a single move to Kalimdor later.
Dwarves and gnomes can complete Dun Morogh → Loch Modan, then take the Deeprun Tram to Stormwind and join at Redridge around the late 10s. Night elves can finish Teldrassil → Darkshore, then use the Stormwind–Auberdine boat connection and join the Duskwood zone around level 20.
|
Target levels |
Route and quest hubs |
|---|---|
|
1–10 |
Northshire → Goldshire → eastern Elwynn Forest |
|
10–16 |
Westfall farms → Sentinel Hill |
|
16–20 |
Lakeshire → remaining Westfall objectives → Deadmines |
|
20–25 |
Darkshire → Raven Hill and the surrounding Duskwood quest areas |
|
25–30 |
Stormwind → Deeprun Tram → Ironforge → Loch Modan → Menethil Harbor |
|
30–35 |
Northern Wetlands → Thandol Span → Refuge Pointe |
|
35–45 |
Return to Lakeshire → northern Redridge entrance to Riverglades → Farholde Keep → Powderfuse Port |
Riverglades can be entered from northern Redridge by turning toward the new zone before continuing into Burning Steppes. That gives this route a land entrance without sending Alliance characters to Tanaris just to catch the boat back.
Horde Leveling Route
The main Horde route stays in Kalimdor until Riverglades: Durotar or Mulgore → Barrens → Stonetalon → Ashenvale → Southern Barrens → Thousand Needles.
Undead can complete Tirisfal → Silverpine first, then travel through Undercity to Orgrimmar and join the Kalimdor route in their late teens.
|
Target levels |
Route and quest hubs |
|---|---|
|
1–10 |
Valley of Trials → Razor Hill, or Camp Narache → Bloodhoof Village |
|
10–18 |
Crossroads → Ratchet → surrounding Barrens camps |
|
18–22 |
Barrens–Stonetalon border → Malaka’jin → Sun Rock Retreat |
|
22–25 |
Northern Barrens → Splintertree Post, Ashenvale |
|
25–30 |
Camp Taurajo → southern Barrens → Freewind Post |
|
30–35 |
Freewind Post → Mirage Raceway, Shimmering Flats |
|
35–45 |
Shimmering Flats → Tanaris → Steamwheedle Port → Powderfuse Port → Rog’mar |
The Steamwheedle route between Tanaris and Powderfuse Port is huge. It gives Horde characters following this Kalimdor route a direct way into Riverglades without first traveling through the Eastern Kingdoms.
Level 45–60 Route for Both Factions
After Riverglades, all routes lead to Kalimdor. Take the ship from Powderfuse Port to Tanaris, then work through the southern zones before making one longer journey north. Connect each flight point as you arrive so later hand-ins don’t require repeating the entire trip.
|
Target levels |
Route |
|---|---|
|
45–48 |
Powderfuse Port → Tanaris → Gadgetzan |
|
48–51 |
Tanaris → Shimmering Flats → Thousand Needles → Feralas |
|
51–54 |
Return to Tanaris → southwestern pass into Un’Goro → Marshal’s Refuge |
|
54–57 |
Travel north to Ashenvale → southern Felwood → Emerald Sanctuary |
|
57–60 |
Northern Felwood → Timbermaw Hold → Winterspring → Everlook |
If you reach a new quest hub below the suggested bracket and most available quests are orange, it’s best to grab the flight point and then return and finish the previous stop’s chains or run a dungeon or two. It might be extremely frustrating trying to clear mobs too strong for your level.
Are Dungeons Worth Running in Forever?
Yes, especially when you have all of its quests ready and a group on the ready. A dungeon run can give you a large batch of turn-ins plus gear and weapons you’ll use for several levels to come. Even after the nerfs, XP rewards for running a dungeon are decent, so it’s not like you’re just standing afk doing nothing. These are the nine new dungeons situationally worth working into your route:
|
Dungeon |
Level range |
Location |
|---|---|---|
|
Hall of Thanes |
13–18 |
Beneath Ironforge, Dun Morogh |
|
Ruins of Lordaeron |
15–20 |
Tirisfal Glades |
|
Excavation Site: Wetlands |
26–31 in the October 1 beta notes |
Wetlands |
|
City of Dalaran |
28–33 |
Alterac Mountains |
|
The Drowned City |
35–40 |
Off the Stranglethorn coast |
|
Krol’dok Stronghold |
40–45 |
Riverglades |
|
Alcaz Prison |
48–53 |
Alcaz Island, Dustwallow Marsh |
|
Blackmaw Hold |
55–60 |
Azshara |
|
Shaper’s Terrace |
58–60 |
Un’Goro Crater |
Even though Blizzard’s dungeon overview still lists Excavation Site at 24–29; in this table I used the 26–31 range given when it opened in beta. Familiar OG dungeons remain decent options too, including Deadmines, Wailing Caverns, Shadowfang Keep, and Scarlet Monastery. If you’re close, have all the quests, and can find a group quickly, there’s no reason not to run them, it’s definitely worth the time.
XP Buffs, Rested Experience, and Camping
Forever gives you several bonuses to make the leveling more interactive and quicker. Rested experience helps with kills, food has its own kill-XP bonus, and the Sleeping Bag gives a separate buff that might sound too low, but can actually save your hours of playtime out of nowhere. Camp features can also improve your stats or give you a rested XP buff. Here’s every bonus and the best ways to use them:
|
Bonus |
What it does |
How to use it while leveling |
|---|---|---|
|
Rested XP |
+100% XP from enemy kills while available |
Log out at an inn or another rested location to log in to a bonus active |
|
Well Fed XP Boost |
5% more XP from kills |
Carry cooked food that grants the buff and refresh it while recovering |
|
Cozy Sleeping Bag |
Builds 1% bonus XP per minute, up to 3% |
Use it during an IRL break |
|
Camp Tent |
Supplies rested XP up to the 5%-of-a-level threshold described by the feature |
Useful when your rested pool is empty; it isn’t a flat 5% XP multiplier |
|
Camp stat buffs |
Give profession-specific combat or recovery benefits |
Pick buffs your class can use and avoid duplicating a mutually exclusive class buff |
Doing at least some cooking is the easiest buff to get because you already need recovery food. Cheap suitable food is enough; expensive meals can cost more than the small leveling benefit is worth.
A Basic Campfire supports three camp features, with each player contributing one. Sitting or crafting nearby for one minute grants the relevant feature benefits. Use that pause to cook, sort bags, or wait for your group. The earliest profession features become available at skill 20, so they aren’t exclusively endgame tools.
The Cozy Sleeping Bag questline starts at level 14. Alliance begins at the Burned-Out Remains near Alexston Farmstead in Westfall, around 37, 50; Horde starts south of Camp Taurajo in the Barrens, around 46, 74. The chain involves a considerable amount of traveling, so try to work it into journeys you are already making or do some quests along your path.
Gear, Professions, and Gold While Leveling
During leveling, getting a better weapon matters way more than replacing several armor pieces, especially for classes doing much of their damage through weapon attacks. For casters, having a bigger manapool that lets you finish a pull before drinking is the biggest improvement. Besides that, there are several things to watch out for during leveling:
-
Buy bag space when you can afford it, more space = fewer vendor runs.
-
Make sure you always have food and water of level appropriate to yours.
-
Learn First Aid and keep bandages to recover without using mana and food.
-
Gather resources along your route. Some extra gold and maybe crafting resources for your profession are always welcome.
Forever changes up the mount acquisition towards you paying for the training and getting the mount for free. The old Classic split where the training was cheap and the actual mount would cost a lot is not working anymore.
Legacy Talents for Leveling Alts
Your first Legacy Point opens the account-wide system. For most players, that happens when their first character reaches level 25, although reaching 150 in a non-gathering primary profession or exploring the whole world map can unlock it another way before that.
When you get your first point, for leveling, Well Rested in the Adventure tree is worth grabbing because it improves rested-XP accumulation and raises the cap. It’s especially useful for an alt that spends several days logged out between sessions.
Legacy Points are shared, but each character spends them separately. At launch, each character can allocate 16 points, allowing different choices for your main and alts. Blizzard’s Legacy System overview explains the unlock conditions and account-wide progression.
