WoW Forever Shaman Guide TL;DR
-
Enhancement is arguably the easiest leveling specialization.
-
Elemental receives Lava Burst and expanded Fire spell interactions, making its combat loop way smoother.
-
Restoration gains Riptide, Water Shield, and better Mana regeneration to perform on the level with other healers.
-
Totem presets, relocation, and recall remove a considerable amount of Classic jankiness we had to deal with.

What Are the Shaman Changes in WoW Forever?

Shaman received a bunch of new talents and spells. All three specializations gain abilities taken from later WoW versions, but they fit Classic’s systems perfectly. The current beta comparison lists 12 new Shaman talents, 33 changed talents, and eight removals. Here is the full list of the biggest changes:
|
Change |
Meaning |
|---|---|
|
Lava Burst |
Elemental gains a Fire nuke dealing 20% more damage against Flame Shock targets. |
|
Maelstrom Weapon |
Melee attacks can reduce Lightning Bolt’s casting time and Mana cost. |
|
Riptide |
Restoration gains an instant heal that strengthens the next Chain Heal. |
|
Water Shield |
Healing criticals or incoming attacks can restore 2% maximum Mana. |
|
Fire Nova rework |
Fire Nova erupts around the active Fire totem without replacing it. |
|
Totem loadouts |
Three Call abilities can deploy four prepared totems simultaneously. |
|
Totemic Projection |
Shamans can relocate their active totems to another position. |
|
Totemic Recall |
Active totems can be removed for a partial Mana refund. |
|
Longer totem duration |
Several important totems now last five minutes and reach 30 yards. |
|
New Shaman races |
Dwarves and Horde-aligned Skyborne gain Shaman access. |
The totem changes are totally set to improve the class more than any damage talent. Totemic Projection moves those active totems instead of replacing them. Totemic Recall removes them and refunds 25% of their Mana cost. Shamans should spend less time fighting their own class mechanics.
Fire Nova also becomes much more practical. It now explodes around an existing Fire totem. The Shaman no longer summons a fragile Fire Nova Totem and waits for its delayed activation.
However, Blizzard has not carried everything from Season of Discovery forward. Shaman tanking will not become a supported specialization at launch. Rockbiter and Earth Shock still generate threat, but they do not provide a complete defensive toolkit.
Best Shaman Specialization in WoW Forever
In my opinion, Enhancement offers the most comfortable leveling experience due to how great the burst is. Restoration remains your ticket into raids, and Elemental appears much more competitive than its Classic version.
|
Specialization |
Best For |
|---|---|
|
Elemental |
Ranged DPS, PvP, and caster groups |
|
Enhancement |
Leveling, solo play, and melee groups |
|
Restoration |
Dungeon healing, raids, and group support |
Enhancement looks like the biggest winner of the improvements round. Let’s be real, the Classic version felt like a basic melee character waiting for Windfury. Forever glues everything together in a much better way - weapon attacks, Lightning Bolt, Stormstrikes; everything now works like an actual rotation.
Restoration remains the safest overall investment. Strong healing is only part of its value. Tremor Totem, Windfury Totem, Mana Tide, Purge, and resistance totems should guarantee group demand.
Elemental probably depends most heavily on final tuning. Its rotation looks much better, but Mana efficiency and spell coefficients will decide whether it performs in longer raid encounters.
Elemental Shaman Guide
Elemental keeps Lightning Bolt as its main filler, but Forever supports the spec with more Fire damage with additional procs, and adds better control tools.
Lava Burst gives Elemental the additional damage button it desperately needed to make the rotation feel better. The basic loop now starts with Flame Shock, followed by Lava Burst and Lightning Bolt. Chain Lightning enters into the equation against grouped enemies. However, this is not the modern Lava Burst players may expect. Flame Shock does not guarantee a critical hit; instead, it increases Lava Burst’s damage by 20%, so critical strike remains dependent on the Shaman’s stats.
Lightning Overload adds another welcome interaction. Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning can repeat at half damage without additional Mana or threat. Elemental should feel less predictable without becoming dependent on constant random procs.
Earthbound also gives the specialization useful PvP and leveling control. Dropping Earthbind Totem immediately roots nearby enemies for five seconds. That creates enough distance for another cast or an escape.
Enhancement Shaman Guide
Enhancement receives a proper rotation instead of relying almost entirely on autoattack swings. Intellect now contributes to melee and spell performance, making using mixed-stat gear far less painful.
Major Enhancement Shaman Changes
-
Mental Dexterity converts part of Intellect into Attack Power.
-
Improved Ghost Wolf allows Ghost Wolf indoors.
-
Shamanistic Focus reduces Shock and Lightning Shield Mana costs.
-
Stormstrike empowers the next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, or Earth Shock.
-
Spirit Weapons reduces threat while Rockbiter is inactive.
-
Mental Quickness converts Intellect into spell damage and healing.
-
Improved Stormstrike provides Mana regeneration and possible cooldown resets.
-
Maelstrom Weapon improves Lightning Bolt through melee attacks.
-
Rage of the Farseer increases melee and spellcasting speed.
Stormstrike now clearly connects both halves of Enhancement’s rotation. After using it, the next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, or Earth Shock deals 20% more damage. The Shaman must decide which spell fits the situation instead of simply waiting for another melee weapon attack. Maelstrom Weapon further supports this loop. Melee attacks can grant stacks that reduce Lightning Bolt’s cast time and Mana cost. But it doesn’t work as a modern enh does - you’re simply getting cast time and mana cost reduction, without an instant cast.
Improved Ghost Wolf is the most noticeable leveling change. It can now be used indoors, removing an annoying restriction we had to deal with previously adventuring throughout caves, buildings, and dungeon corridors.
Restoration Shaman Guide
Restoration remains a group-focused healer built around Chain Heal and totem support. Forever adds an instant heal, more dependable Mana regeneration, and less awkward talent maintenance.
Major Restoration Shaman Changes
-
Riptide provides immediate healing and a healing-over-time effect.
-
Riptide strengthens Chain Heal when cast on the same target.
-
Water Shield restores Mana through healing criticals or incoming attacks.
-
Mindfulness allows Spirit regeneration to continue while casting.
-
Tidal Focus improves healing efficiency and spell hit.
-
Improved Reincarnation now also increases maximum Health.
-
Healing Way directly improves Healing Wave without stacking a buff.
-
Totemic Focus now affects spells that deploy or relocate totems.
Riptide provides Restoration withшт a desperately needed instant healing button. It heals immediately, leaves a 15-second effect, and increases Chain Heal’s effectiveness by 25% when Chain Heal begins on that target. This version is so similar to what Resto has in later versions of the game, and it creates a natural healing sequence during massive group damage encounters. Riptide stabilizes the endangered player, then Chain Heal spreads stronger healing to nearby allies. I think that this shift in class design not only moves the class's gameplay forward but indicates that we’re going to have mechanically challenging group content released with new Forever patches.
The spec should remain excellent in raids. However, you still have that positioning toll placed upon you - Chain Heal loses value when players spread too far apart, and several totems primarily affect the Shaman’s immediate group.
Best Shaman Race in WoW Forever
Orcs, Tauren, and Trolls remain the traditional Horde options. Dwarves give Alliance players access to the Shaman class, and there’s also a Horde-aligned Skyborne that received the class as their faction-exclusive choice. We also get a neat lore flavor behind playing Skyborne, since they’re basically powered by Air Elementals.

Strong melee racial bonus |
|
Troll |
Elemental and Restoration |
Berserking improves casting and attack speed |
|

|
Dwarf |
Alliance PvP and defensive play |
Stoneform removes Bleeds, Diseases, and Poisons |
|
Skyborne |
New Horde leveling experience |
New race, starting zone, and Shaman class fantasy |
Orc Enhancement is a classic combo. Its melee-focused racial abilities suit Windfury and Stormstrike, plus stun resistance is broken in PvP.
Troll fits every specialization and playstyle. Berserking can speed up Lightning Bolt, Chain Heal, or Enhancement attacks. Tauren trades direct throughput for War Stomp, which can create enough time to cast a heal. The slightly annoying part of the ruleset is that only the Horde Skyborne can choose Shaman. Alliance Skyborne receive Mage access instead. Blizzard confirmed this faction split while discussing Forever’s new race and class combinations, which I think is very questionable. It makes sense RP-wise, but why make up this lore to begin with?
Best Professions for Shaman
Forever expands professions with new equipment and consumables - you can find more in my Forever professions guide. Shaman can benefit from several combinations depending on the chosen specialization.
|
Profession Pair |
Best For |
|---|---|
|
Mining + Engineering |
PvP and maximum utility |
|
Herbalism + Alchemy |
Every specialization |
|
Skinning + Leatherworking |
Enhancement leveling |
|
Tailoring + Enchanting |
Elemental and Restoration |
Leatherworking is the natural gearing profession for the class. Shaman wears leather before level 40 and Mail afterward. Its value will depend on how the new crafted sets compare with dungeon equipment.
