How to Prepare for GTA 6 Release Guide TLDR:
-
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, only on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, so if you don’t have one of these consoles yet, it’s best to grab one sooner rather than later, as there are no signs of price increases slowing down.
-
The PS5 Pro will likely be the best place to play GTA 6 if you care about higher resolution and better visuals. The regular PS5 and Series X are the best middle ground, and the Series S is the cheapest way to play, just don’t expect 60 FPS on any of them.
-
The game is rumored to be around 210 GB, so clear out old games, screenshots, and unused data, or expand your storage before launch. Preloading starts on November 12.
-
GTA 6 is expected to launch with a staggered rollout by time zone, starting in New Zealand and reaching the Americas around 19 hours later.
-
Xbox players can switch their account region to New Zealand to play earlier, but PlayStation doesn’t allow that, so PS5 players will need to wait and dodge all spoilers.

How to Prepare for GTA 6 Release

Can’t wait for GTA 6 launch day? Maybe it’s time to prepare for the release! While it normally seem like no big deal to just download and play the game, it’s still good to prepare in advance, especially for such an important and big one like GTA 6. With the game expected to take up over 200 GB, a little prep now can save you from scrambling for storage space or waiting hours on a download when everyone else is already playing. In this guide, I will share details on how to get your console ready, free up space, and figure out exactly when GTA 6 unlocks in your timezone. Let’s get into it!
How to Prepare Your Console for GTA 6 Release
GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19, 2026 only on PS5 and XBOX Series X|S. Yes, it’s only coming on the consoles at first, so if you still don’t have one, you need to get one of these 3 platforms (or 4 if you count PS5 Pro, but more about that later). Don’t put it on the back burner because prices of hardware keep rising, the memory shortage caused by AI has no signs of slowing down, so if you wanna play GTA 6 on day one, you need a console. But which one should you buy? As I mentioned already, you have 4 very different options, which is a good thing. Starting from the cheapest and most accessible XBOX Series S all the way to the most expensive PS5 Pro that will offer the best GTA 6 experience. Yes, GTA 6 is heavily marketed for PS5 and Rockstar traditionally focuses on PlayStation consoles first with better optimization (with a few exceptions like GTA 4 being better on XBOX 360), and PS5 Pro really seems to be the best way to play it if you’re looking for it. But don’t expect 60 fps on the Pro console, it will probably just be higher resolution with some graphical improvements. Overall, the regular PS5 and XBOX Series X seem to be the best middle ground in terms of accessibility and visuals, while Series S will be the cheapest way to play GTA 6, although we still haven’t seen any footage of how the game will look and play on this console, which is concerning. Also keep in mind that GTA 6 will be the digital-only release at first, so you can buy the cheaper PS5 Digital Edition at first and then upgrade it with a disc drive later if you need to, but also keep in mind that Sony is still planning to end physical disc production for all new games starting in January 2028. Here’s a breakdown of all platforms you can play GTA 6 on release:
|
Console |
Console Price (2026 MSRP) |
Expected Resolution |
Expected FPS |
Recommendations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
PS5 Pro |
$899.99 / €899.99 / £789.99 |
Up to 4K |
30 FPS |
Currently, the PS5 Pro is the most powerful console on the market. If you care about visuals and are looking for the best way to play GTA 6 on release, then choose this one. |
|
PS5 |
Digital Edition: $599.99 / €599.99 / £519.99 Disc Model: $649.99 / €649.99 / £569.99 |
1440p (2K) |
30 FPS |
PS5 offers the best balance between visuals, performance, and price. This will be the default option for most gamers. |
|
XBOX Series X |
1TB with Disc Drive: $799,99 / €799,99 / £669.99 1TB Digital Edition: $749.99 / €749.99 / £619.99 |
1440p (2K) |
30 FPS |
XBOX Series X is the more expensive option compared to PS5, but it has some advantages, including the ability to change account region and possibly play the game earlier, which I will talk about later. |
|
XBOX Series S |
512 GB: $499.99 / €499.99 / £429.99 1TB: $599.99 / €599.99 / £519.99 |
1080p (Full HD, possibly dynamic resolution) |
30 FPS |
XBOX Series S is the cheapest and most accessible option to play GTA 6 on release. If you don’t really care about visuals and possible performance issues, then you should pick this one. |
Now that we've figured out all the options, let’s talk about how to prepare your console for the GTA 6 release, and the first thing you need to do is make sure there’s enough space. GTA 6 is rumored to be a whopping 210GB in size, and it’s just the base game on release. Just a single-player game with no updates, no multiplayer, no DLC. The most obvious solution is just to wipe everything off your console, including:
-
Old games you don’t play anymore that just sit and take up space
-
Screenshots and videos you don’t need. PS5, for example, takes a screenshot with each trophy you earn by default, so you need to go through each folder in Media Gallery and delete all screenshots and videos you don’t need.
-
Go to your settings, then Storage, and make sure to clean up game data you don’t need. You can copy it to external storage or cloud if you’ll possibly need it later. But keep in mind that on PlayStation, you need an active PS Plus subscription to upload data to the cloud.
-
If you did all of that and you still need space, then you should upgrade your storage. The PS5 features a highly versatile storage architecture that allows you to expand your space internally using an internal M.2 NVMe SSD as well as an external USB Hard Drive or SSD. On XBOX, you’ll need to buy a Storage Expansion Card to store games. You can also use external storage, but there are some limitations: you can only store game data there, but can’t play games directly installed on it.
The huge size of GTA 6 is also the reason why I don’t recommend buying 512 GB version of XBOX Series S. If you’re also planning to capture a lot of footage of GTA 6 and considering future updates as well as online mode, I’d say expanding storage is a must. Also make sure to prepare your internet because even though there’s a big window of pre-download, it’s best to be fully prepared and enjoy the game on day one. Preloading for GTA 6 starts on Thursday, November 12, 2026.
Second thing to consider (especially if you already own the console) is to make sure your console and controller are fully functional and there are no issues. You won’t wanna deal with any sort of malfunction when GTA 6 launches, that’s for sure. Also make sure your console is updated. Since GTA 6 is a full digital game on release, you will need the latest firmware version to play the game.
GTA 6 Release Time Zones & How to Play the Game Early
While still not confirmed by Rockstar, it seems like GTA 6 is expected to launch with a staggered local time zone rollout (midnight in each region) rather than a single simultaneous global release. New Zealand is the first region where GTA 6 will be available, and after the whopping 19 hours, the game will be available worldwide. This is horrible news, and instead it should be a worldwide release, if you ask me. Because of that, if you’re in the US, for example, you need to avoid spoilers and any info on the internet for 18 hours. But there is some good news as well. If you’re on XBOX, you can easily switch your account region to New Zealand and play the game at its earliest release. The only limitation on XBOX is that you can only change the region once every three months. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to change your PlayStation account like that. You can only create a new one and choose a new region. If you’re on a PS5 console with an existing account and this time zone release happens to be true, then you have to wait and avoid the internet for many hours.
How to Buy GTA 6 and Get All Bonus Content
GTA 6 is available for pre-order right now. Pre-ordering either the Standard or Ultimate Edition of GTA 6 includes the Vintage Vice City Pack and a free one-month subscription to GTA+. The official prices for GTA 6 across PS5 and XBOX Series consoles are $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. The Ultimate Edition offers even more bonus content, including exclusive vehicles, weapons, custom shops, businesses, and story missions. If you have any trouble with pre-ordering or the game isn’t available in your region at all, you can always check out and buy a GTA 6 account on PlayHub and jump into the game on day one with all bonus content.
Should You Replay Older GTA Games Before GTA 6?
As it was the case with previous GTA games, you don’t need to replay all of them just for the sake of it because GTA 6 will feature all new story and characters that are not connected to other games in any shape or form. Surely there will be returning characters like already-confirmed Valentina from GTA Online, but if you don’t wanna play previous games or don’t feel like it, then you don’t have to. But as I said, there will be returning characters and a lot of references to previous GTA games, so if you want to be fully in touch with the series, then I recommend playing at least GTA 5 and maybe even GTA 4. If you’re a veteran player and feel nostalgic, then you should hop on GTA 5 or Online for one last playthrough before GTA 6 release. Also, I’ve seen some PC players who are used to higher FPS share stories of them playing GTA 5 on console to adjust their eyes for 30 FPS, which is also not bad advice.
That’s pretty much it that you need to know and prepare for the GTA 6 release. In short: prepare your wallet, console, storage, internet, and most importantly, your free time!
